Need some advice/opinions

Hey guys,

Recently I've gotten more active in trading than I have been in the past few months. Its just been fun getting a bunch of nice looking inserts/parallels etc. of my favorite players and what not. However it is has gotten to the point where I only really collect cards where I like the look of the card and the picture of the player and what not.

I have kind of backed away from the Game Used/Autographs just because I do not believe they are real, they are more expensive/book more than inserts, parallels,etc. and there are too many out there ruining the hobby for me. However I have gotten to the point where it seems like the only cards I have left to trade are game used/autographs. Being an insert/parallel/base collector what would you do given my situation? Has anyone experienced the same situation before?

I know I could just sell the Game Used/autographs and turn the money over for cards I want but I have to be honest, I feel I already have dropped enough money on this hobby in the past. I don't mind spending a limited amount of money on shipping, supplies, and maybe buying a few cards/packs every now and then. Anyone else ever feel the same way?

Not really sure what kind of advice you are looking for, but I would start with believing that game used and auto cards are real albeit with a few fake patches thrown in the mix. Any way if you dont really care for gu or auto and really like just plain old cards and inserts, then I wouldnt spend another dime on opening any wax except for a few products. say opc mvp victory etc... And if you only collect cards you like the look of, why not sell off all your game used and autos in one lot, and spend the money on some of the best looking cards in the hobby... Vintage?

There is no law that says you cannot trade GU or Autos for other stuff. I have done it in the past. As long as both sides are happy with the deal, go for it!

Many of my favorite cards come from insert sets from the nineties. I understand exactly what you mean about liking the look of the card. Many people here will gladly trede you their inserts for your GU/autos.

I've been thinking about only doing sets lately, and also dabbling in some Whole game used stuff, Sticks, jerseys, etc. I think I saw a Liles jersey going for 300 a while back, that's less than a tin of the Cup. And it's garunteed to have a Shield. Sticks are (fairly)cheap as well.

I know what you mean. A couple of years ago I pondered why I was in the hobby. I used to be one of those people that bought boxes and boxes of every single product that came out and wound up blowing 1000s of dollars and pretty much wasting my money. Naturally, I was able to land some pretty sweet cards most through trades and box breaks most notably being a gretzky/lemieux dual sott, sid sott, sid ice scripts, various 05-06 cup rookies etc etc, but they had little or no meaning.

i wound up working on a couple of sets and players and for the past year or so, that's what i have been doing and i have essentially cut down on wax. busting wax does help with traders to get, but i haven't had a problem building my sets and corey perry and leaf's pc with the trade bait i still have...so that's what i suggest you do. pick a player, a team and a couple of sets and focus on those...

Thanks a lot for your adivce guys! I couldn't sleep well so knowing this might help me sleerp a bit better now. I'll post a story later about a card company (Futera- they make soccer cards) and how they proved they are faking jerseys.

I'm going to stick with collecting three of my life long favorite players; Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, and Geoff Sanderson. I'm going to go after a few sets fromt he 90s and I'll probably go for an Avs insert/parallel set from this season like Ultra Golds, Ice etc.

Just sell or use the GU/auto stuff for trade bait. Use the money/cards to acquire your wants.

avalanchefan21, please my friend, do not feel bad for your wants and preferences, collect who you want, what you want, and how you want. that's the real beauty of this hobby..

if one guy can get the 100$ patch he's been looking for while the other guy gets 200$ worth of lower end inserts.. and both are happy .. there is nothing wrong with that on either side..

let me know if there are any upper deck inserts from 90-99 you need for sets or personal..
