Hopefully someone can help shed some light on these mystery patches.

For the life of me, I can't remember the Flyers wearing a black jersey this past year (2011-12). They may have, as I don't have cable and missed quite a few games, but I've searched for any kind of special commemorative patches or jerseys and come up blank. The patches all seem to be letters that are smaller than the size letters used in the nameplate, and none of them match up to the players names.

I have one of the Cup Signature Patches at home with what looks to be a "P" in it, but I forgot to check whether it was game-used or event-worn.

Here's a few of the cards:

So as you can see, some of the possible letters include: H, S, P, O, B/E, Y, A, R. At first, I thought FLYERS could have been one of the patches, but I don't recall ever seeing the team name spelled out on the jersey before.

If anyone has any insight into this, please help me out. It's been keeping me up at night!

...kidding, but I'd really love to know where these patches are from.

Thanks,

Mike

I'm pretty sure the photoshoot jerseys have all kinds of lettering on them (city/team comes to mind) to allow for all these patch cards.

So they add patches that aren't normally there? Weird.

Does anyone know where I can find some of these photoshoot jerseys? I've seen a few that have different numbers than the player actually wears, but none where they have extra words.

Yes, UD stitches on extra letters (that aren't even close to being the same design or quality you'd find on the nameplate/numberplates of originals). I believe they run up and down the arm, but it could be on the hem.

IMO these pieces are even worse than the photoshoot jerseys they're attached to.

I can't find the photos but I think they also had lettering below the # on the back? Agreed, they're pointless and not very appealing. If a patch has to come from a photoshoot jersey it should at least look like it belongs.

Wow, just wow. I had absolutely no idea that this happened.

I've seen videos of players putting on and immediately taking off jerseys just to get the "event-worn" classification, but to add patches simply so they have more available for cards is a scam, in my opinion.

What's next, "player-touched" memorabilia? :|

Somebody had a pic of a Pens photoshoot jersey from 06-07 where they've sewn on something like "2006-07 Pittsburgh Penguins Hockey Team" or something like that along the back underneath the numbers. I've also heard the same thing as you though...sometimes up and down the arm (it would make sense for teams like the Hurricanes who have (had?) a border at the bottom of the jersey.

But yes, everybody speaks the truth here...extra letters are added for the sake of creating more photoshoot patch cards.

This is the Penguins photoshoot jersey,

I remember seeing pictures from a photoshoot a few years ago where they showed the players signing cards, and behind them in the pic I could see Sabres jerseys that had player nameplates in a few places on the jersey..I want to say it was a Grangani jersey in the background.
