On another site, I worked out a " too good too be true deal ", they asked for a "gift " payment on Paypal.
I didn't know you wouldn't be able to do a claim if the item wasn't received. Now I am out money cause the guy not only went into hiding but isn't giving me my refund.
My advice is not to do a gift as payment if you haven't dealt with the person before as I am learning while he is hiding on that site he is very active on here......

That really sucks, sorry.......I never send as "gift" for this exact reason, you have to protect yourself

Ouch, sorry to hear about that. Although the incident is from another board, Bruce or another mod may want to know who the member is, if they're active here...just so they don't try that trick here.

And yeah, only use gift payments (and not here of course) if you ABSOLUTELY trust the person!!!

I used to think it wasn't a big deal sending a gift, until I got scammed recently on another site thinking I would be safe sending within my province.

I no longer ask for nor take gift payments and have made it a rule to only deal on my favorite site "HobbyInsider"... unless of course a must-have whale surfaced ;)

a big thumbs down to the scammer.....sorry to hear of your trouble. Its important to only send a gift payment to someone you trust implicitly.

I went through the issue with a seller recently. Told him flat out that I wasn't impugning his rep, but since this was our first deal I did not wish to send as a gift. He accepted that at face value fortunately.

I'm sorry to hear you got burned. Vegas is correct though - you may have recourse through your credit card company.

sorry to hear that hope all goes well..
btw whats the big deal about sending a gift payment
anyways??
is that not a way of getting around paypels fees?

I only "gift" on low $$$ transactions. Save the seller a little bit on fees. I have never been ripped off but if I ever did it would only be a couple bucks. I also don't have a problem if it is a memeber who has to send first. The card is in my hand. Why kill the seller with fees?

i have had several sellers insist on payment being sent as a gift, so what i do is tell them that i will send regular and add a few dollars to help pay for paypal fees. if they are legit sellers they always accept if they are scammers they decline either way its a win win for every-one in my opinion. sorry to hear about the scam by the way, it happened to me last year (hence my new policy) and it shakes your trust in people a little. but just remember for every bad one there are a thousand good ones.

clint

Well no credit card as I had enough funds in my PP account, so I just sent it thinking it can't happen...... then it did.
Only a few people do I send a payment or money as a gift, and normally these people can be trusted, this one took it and ran.
I'm very happy that on HI it's against policy

I have done it for upwards of $1K sending and receiving...all depends on your level of trust and ability to absorb loss... I have even sent to people before receiving payment and had them 'personal' 'payment owed' me upon receipt. All my way of stickin' it to the man........"but, you are the man"....I know...."so you're stickin it to yourself".....Maybe.

Can I ask the mods a question? If this person is an active member here, should we not at least know who it is? I'd prefer not to deal with someone who knowingly stole money from someone else...

Learned my lesson, bought a lot from another respectable member over at another forum and got ripped
