New Panini Distribution Program

Looks like the details of the new Panini Hobby Distribution policies are becoming available. Here's some of the details of the new program that apply to Distributors:

· 7 day window for Authorized B/M retailers
· Retail MAPP Policy effective for 30 days from release date
· No business to business posting for 30 days from release for retailers
· Online case breakers must be submitted for approval
· Removing the SRP from products
· Authorized Panini Distributors may post on B2B in accordance with MAPP guidelines
· Authorized Panini Distributors can sell (Pre-booking) to authorized retailers at manufacturer listed wholesale price
· Authorized Panini Distributors may not sell below manufacturer listed wholesale price for 30 days after release
· Case sizes will be the same going forward for Masters and Directs
· Authorized Panini Distributors are not allowed to sell to the end consumers
· Panini has the right to review all case sales and to allocate at our discretion
· Can only sell to approved retailers for first 30 days of product release
· All case sales to non-authorized accounts after 30 days must be submitted for approval
· No Cross border selling
· All product trades must be approved

Here are some additional details:

· Brick & Mortar Stores will no longer be permitted to wholesale Panini product - any stores caught continuing this practice will be terminated from the authorized program.

· Only approved Authorized Internet Retailers may sell Panini product online. AIR applications will be available in a few days. There will only be a small number chosen to retail Panini products online. Show dealer applications will be sent out during the next week to 10 days.

means... It looks to me like Panini is trying to find the 'and' and not lose a lot of customers while helping brick and mortar shops. On the surface, this appears quite a bit better than what UD has in place. Only time will tell as they haven't released all the details and the implementation has yet to occur...
 
Removing the SRP from products

Yep - another victory for Hobby Stores........ and at a great loss to the consumer.


So Hobby shops, how's business now that buyers can no longer buy online as easily as before?? No more Pre-Sells and no more case breaks by Hobbyists - at least not to the extent it was before. I have no idea what is going on North of me - but I can tell you that at the shops in my town - prices are sky high. Only problem for the consumer is that they can no longer buy product - and if they don't get PC items - they cannot get a return on their purchase through selling.

I'm guessing that will become a problem for a lot of hobbyists. What happens when they turn to Evil Bay for singles???
 
The best thing Panini could do for the Hobby Shop is to avoid putting real price-point dogs, and the rest should take care of itself. Pinnacle is available at two-thirds of release price, and I think Contenders is as well. A good Hobby Shop can survive, but it gets much harder with products that don't move at release prices.

Simply put.... If Panini was focused on CONTENT and their products held cost or went up, none of this would be necessary. I was on the fence about supporting them next year as it was... If they make me, and other like me, jump through hoops, many of us casebusters will just stay away.
 
Guys just to be clear on this, its our understanding that at least at first, this policy will not affect companies selling out of Canada whereas the UD policy took no prisoners.
 
Well Topps and ITG will be getting most of my money now.

I'm with Mike, though, too - wasn't planning on spending a lot on Panini next season unless I started seeing proper collation in a case.

I am curious, though, what the heck this means?

So if I *do* buy a case of Certified from my LCS, I can't post the breaks?? Not making sense.

Pretty sure this is meant for guys like C&C. They buy direct from distributors.
 
Simply put.... If Panini was focused on CONTENT and their products held cost or went up, none of this would be necessary.

Only partially true. If there weren't wholesalers who are doubling as retailers and selling direct to the public at wholesale prices, those prices would not drop nearly as much. That's part (I believe) of what the manufacturers are trying to stop.

I was on the fence about supporting them next year as it was... If they make me, and other like me, jump through hoops, many of us casebusters will just stay away.

I'm curious why, if you want to buy product as cheaply as a retailer, why you wouldn't have to jump through hoops like retailers? We have to file tax papers, have licensing from the government, etc.

I have all of my paperwork tax paperwork filed, have a retail sales certificate and pay taxes. I just don't own a brick and mortar store, I operate an eBay store. I am a WHOLESALER!!!! That said, I should not have to buy my products retail. It looks as though Panini understands there are legitimate "Casebusters" out there that should still be able to get product through distribution channels. UD, on the other hand, have made it clear, I am a retail customer where buying wax is concerned. I disagree and thus haven't, and will not be buying any product through their "approved" sources.
 
Mike, could you show me your pricing for resale of boxes and cases? I might be interested in purchasing from you, but I can't seem to find it in your eBay store.

so what you're implying is that if you don't sell sealed boxes
or cases, you should not have a route to purchase from
the distributor. Only true collectors should be opening wax.

funny, my distributor would only sell to me knowing that the
vast majority of what I bought, I opened myself, thereby not
competing with local shops on wax.

some shop owners sure are fickle people.....

The very fact your distributor is selling to you means he is direct competition with the card shops. You buying from him means less business for the card shops, doesn't it?

Those are the guys UD and Panini are trying to remove from the business model -- guys who immediately cheapen the value of product by selling it at 20-30% below the manufacturer's suggested price.
