Hey all, hope the start of 2019 has treated everyone well. 2018 was all over the map for me in terms of pickups. Some months were very busy, some moderately busy, and others non-existent. New products have continued to drop over the past few months, Larry Murphy has been scattered throughout some of them and I didn't really know what that would mean for the new year. Would the products be lightly broken? Would they flood the market at affordable prices to the point where I could add a bunch all at once?
Well, January has come and gone and the early results are in - 10 new pickups covering a variety of his teams. Let's get to the pictures, shall we?
I tried to hold off on taking advantage of our own kmitchel Kevin's reliable US mailbox help again, but when a pickup I will show later in this post necessitated it, I asked him to add a few other small Ebay pickups to my tab:

I've always kind of liked the looks of the manufactured puck cards in Trilogy. Never had any relevant to my PC to chase though until now:

If you've seen my Lumber Kings rainbow in particular, you know I'm a sucker for cards with colorful, easily identifiable pieces of Murphy's vintage KOHO sticks where possible. A year or 2 ago, I saw this card come up in a Completed Listings search; somehow I had missed it. Maybe it was an Ebay.ca only listing. Whatever the reason, it had sold for a very small price and I was disappointed to have not seen it.
I saved the pic of it in my "Murphy Population Report" and put it in the back of my mind until recently, when I was thrilled to see it pop up in a listing from our own pacadie. Low starting bid, higher BIN...I still hit the BIN and took no chances, right? Not so fast. Based on the previous sale price and my own experiences selling cards from this release, I felt this could be an under-the-radar card that I might get somewhere between the 2 price options. So I opened the bidding and let it ride. I shouldn't have. I still won it, but for more than than original BIN price. Just a few bucks more, so it could've been worse, but still...point made:

Now, the card that made me tag in Kevin again...
You know how IP signed cards make up a big niche part of my collection. I documented my desire for the signed North Stars ADA team issue I finally pulled the trigger on from that boutique auction site last year. This and other old team issues are often hard enough to find in their own right, so signed copies are always a nice surprise and a priority if I can find them.
Up there with the ADA in terms of toughness - Murphy's 1980s Washington Capitals Pizza Hut team issues. So imagine my surprise when I came across a listing of 6 of them, all signed...including a Murphy. I had to have it and was pretty sure I could move the others to recoup some of my costs. Only problem? The seller was US-based and didn't want to ship to Canada. Kevin got the hot tag, submitted my offer and got it done. Can't thank you enough for your help, Kevin:

That was a close contender for my favorite pickup of January, but I had to go with this one.
This card was listed on Ebay earlier this month, but even before I saw it on Ebay, our own Billie brought it to my attention when it was pictured in a break on her Euro hockey cards Facebook group I'm part of. I loved the look of it and it had my name all over it, but the money still had to work. I engaged the seller on Facebook and we had a friendly discussion but couldn't quite come to terms. I figured they would end up letting it ride on Ebay for a while and might come back to me if they weren't getting the price they were looking for, but to my surprise, they promptly ended the listing and relisted it at standard auction with a low starting bid. I was thrilled - this was my chance to possibly get it for even less than I'd offered and make my point.
Well, it didn't exactly work out that way. I should be sniping cards but due to glitches I've had with my sniping service, I don't want to take chances with rare pieces. So I bid the honest way and took my chances. My original offer price was outbid, so I put my money where my mouth was, upped the ante and won...for his price.
Was I shilled to make sure he got his price? I have no idea. I paid more than I wanted to or thought I should've had to, but I wanted that card and knew I'd be mad if I let it go out of stubborn pride. I took the risk by bidding the standard way and have to be prepared to accept the consequences of that. I still think it's a great-looking card and adds some definite beef to the LA portion of my PC:
