NHL Al-Star game

After the success of the whole John Scott ASG appearance, I started thinking this could be something that could actually make the game more interesting. What if something like this could be done each year:

1- Each team's players select ONE player they'd like to see get a chance to be in the All-Star game.
2- Those players are put in a different section of the "ballot" for fans to vote for
3- The player with the most votes gets in. One player from each Conference gets an invite

I think this would not only make it more interesting for us as fans but would also make it a great event for those who ordinarily would never get a chance to participate in the All-Star game. Let's face it, it's usually the same faces year after year and many players don't even want to attend. We know these players would be honored to be there!

I don't hate it but I bet you would end up seeing the same teams represented over and over - teams that have large fan bases and good PR departments. I could really care less about seeing some fourth line plugger for the Rangers in the ASG every other year.

After thinking about this fiasco a bit, I have come to a couple opinions/thoughts.

1. If I ever go to a hockey event based bucket list adventure, I want to go to an ASG. Maybe the game(s) will be crap, maybe the Skills Competition is a "joke" but maybe watching the players have fun interacting with their families and fans is what the weekend is/should be about.

2. Nashville has more to do with the success of this years ASG than the John Scott situation. Granted, the Scott saga brought people in but Nashville embraced the fans and the players and turned this into a marquee event - not just another game.

3. The venue/city has more to do with the ASG weekend than the game. Get the players out with the people, have stuff going on outside of the game itself, blend in some sort of fundraiser and/or community development and make sure the whole city is buzzing to make this work.

4. I could care less about seeing effort from the players - this year was great and I like this layout. The problem is that it will grow stale and, at some point, some teams Stanley Cup dreams could be dashed when someone gets hurt in this game. I'm fine with more Harlem Globetrotters than truly "good" hockey. I want to see the players having fun and I want to see their personalities, I don't want to see some one laying down to block a shot.

5. Fans are a bunch of babies. They think they "deserve" to see the best players in the world going balls out in an All Star game in the middle of the season playing hard hand in hand with the players they are going to be spearing in the playoffs in a couple months. Then they think they "deserve" to bring back the days when players weren't really friends and hated each other to truly build rivalries.

6. There is no way to make the game itself look like a true hockey game year in and year out. There is no format they can introduce that will hold the same allure a decade from now so there is no sense in trying. Shake it up every year and just keep trying to make it unique.

7. I ramble too much.

Well there would be ways to avoid the same teams being represented each year. I just think many of the "popular" but not superstar players should get a chance to experience the event. We all know they'd appreciate it way more than the stars do
