Here's an interesting article showing that the NHL is approaching the NBA in terms of attendance and popularity. . . similar to the pre-1995 lockout years.

Good to see that NHL attendance hasn't dipped much given the global economic woes. Can't say as much for the NBA based on those figures.

The article reminded me of the saying "there are lies, there are damn lies and then there are statistics". If you look at the chart the Devils are claiming 82% and the Wings 100% of capacity. Based on the games from those arenas that I've seen there are a lot of empty seats disguised as fans. I know the teams will claim those seats are sold but what does it say when corporations buy up seats then can't give them away?

I read that article yesterday. I never really watched hockey before the lockout and watched my fair share of NBA. Now its the other way around so obviously I'm not the only one thats made the switch.

I am proud to be a hockey fan. Sorry, but basketball has lost its class throughout the years.

Philadelphia
Sixers: 12,758 (5 games)/62.4
Flyers: 19,267 (8 games)/98.8

That article mocked lacrosse. Currently the Philadelphia Wings have outsold the Sixers in the past 2 years in average attendance.

Minor rant, but Basketball has become such a joke sport in recent years. Especially with the emergence of the garbage like the "And 1" tours and such. Its all about showboating and disrespecting other players, its no more entertaining than paying someone to pour hot coffee all over my body.

People want to be entertained by sports, basketball has lost its appeal with the antics the players put on nowadays. They have no respect for themselves as people, or players.

Ever since MJ left, the sport is all about getting your own sneaker or having your face on a McDonalds Happy Meal. It has gotten so trashy and arrogant. Its not even fun to watch anymore.

I won't say I know a lot about basketball, but my impression is exactly what you have stated. It seems the players who get the most attention are the ones with the biggest entourages and most outrageous headlines.

That's why I warned against guys like Avery becoming a "spokesman" for the NHL. When a clown like that is talking smack about players like Jarome Iginla, something is not right. There is adding color and then there is grabbing attention for the wrong reasons.

To me, that's basketball.
