So, Philadelphia is the only team that didn't get it once out 100 times run. Which makes sense given they have the least chance.

I tried it and on my first try the Canucks won. Did it 5 more and twice hit Flames and Jets and Leafs once.

It wouldn't do any good for Edmonton to draft Auston Matthews. It would create such a glut at forward.

Either the pick or one or two of the forwards would have to be traded for some real defensive help.

Or trade down and get Chychrun at #5, and get another 2nd round pick or defensive prospect. Better to go with the prospect since Oilers have been terrible with their 2nd and later picks.

It would be nice to see Arizona get the #1 pick. Hometown boy getting picked would be a great story.
 
If Edmonton got it they would likely draft Mathews and do some trades. That's what I would do. I want the Leafs to get him, they need a legit franchise player. Time for things to turn around in Toronto.

I agree, they would probably draft him and then trade for some star talent. Or trade the first overall pick for a top five draft pick plus a good prospect.
 
What the Oilers really need are a couple of young potentially top pair dmen. But what team has a surplus that they would give the dman for Matthews? or RNH?

Regardless if Oilers get top pick or not, they need to do this. I can see them trading down to pick a top d, and then trying to deal RNH for another d. But I'm not sure which teams are starving for a C and have extra d to give up, plus Edm could end up eating some of the salary to make the deal happen. Ducks? Shattenkirk (have to make sure you can re-sign him before he becomes a UFA)?

If Edmonton is able to sign a quality UFA dman, then RNH could be unloaded, along with his salary, for a blue chip prospect.
 
Will they be drawing the balls live this time? I don't like how they do it behind closed doors.

I completely agree with this 110%.

The lottery & it's process are ridiculous. Needs to be overhauled for sure. The team finishing last in the standings has not picked 1st Overall since 2011. Guess who got lucky enough to finish last and pick 1st? Edmonton.

Both times Edmonton has finished last they picked 1st overall (2010, 2011) and then they won the lottery to pick 1st in 2012 and 2015.

No offense Oilers fans, but when you pick 1st, 1st, 1st, 7th, 3rd, and 1st, you should be showing some sort of signs of improvement.

Other teams that have picked 1st overall since 2005, and what they've done since picking 1st overall:

2005 - Pittsburgh - Stanley Cup, 3 division titles
2006 - St. Louis - 5 playoff appearances, 2 division titles
2007 - Chicago - 3 Stanley Cups, 2 division titles
2008 - Tampa Bay - 3 playoffs appearance, Cup Final appearance
2009 - NY Islanders - 2 playoff appearances
2013 - Colorado - 1 playoff appearance, 1 division title
2014 - Florida - Missed playoffs last year, but their #1 pick did win the Calder, and they appear to be on pace to qualify for the playoffs this year.

2010, 2011, 2012, 2015 - Edmonton - Yet to make the playoffs

Edmonton's placing since picking 1st:

11-12: 29th
12-13: 24th
13-14: 28th
14-15: 28th
15-16: Currently sit 29th.

They are the outlier, it blows my mind how you can keep getting handed talent and just continuing to be horrible.
 
I agree with Armstrong too and I hope he gets some support. The current lottery favors the better teams even more instead of helping the worst teams. I just did it 10 times and NJ (11th last) got 1st pick 3 times, Habs won it once and got 2nd another time.

The Oilers are a victim of bad management/hockey direction and an owner who thinks he knows hockey (sort of what is happening in Vancouver now too).

MacT messed things up royally, and Katz insisting Yakupov get taken over Murray are the root of the problems. Plus (just like the Canucks), scouts are filled with old buddies who really don't have a knack for picking out talent.

If you look at the current D of the Oilers, it's pretty much an AHL line up. Vets were kicked out of the team years ago, and the young players were rewarded for their mediocre play with big fat contracts.

It'll take years to right this ship, and soon the contracts of these high picks will expire and *poof* they're gone. Re-build fail. Is it possible for the Oilers to blow 2 rebuilds consecutively??? That would be nuts.

Interesting that Buffalo got more in the top 3 than Colorado, and Colorado and Carolina were either 1st overall or bust.

The irony of the situation being that some of the Oilers current young core/prospects that were drafted later in the first round (Draisaitl, Nurse, Eberle) could be seen as more desirable players to build a team from than a few of their first overall picks (RNH, Yakupov). Will it really penalize them by taking away the chance at a first overall selection or should they lose their first round selections altogether? The message being - congratulations on your first overall pick, now BUILD A COMPETITIVE TEAM around this kid because if you have another poopy season the best you can do next year is pick early in the 2nd round.
