So i have been gone from the hobby for quite a few years but have recently been back looking at select cards that i think are truly life long PC worthy cards, and i haven't been able to miss the NHL shield logos from The Cup and Ultimate collection and i am shocked at some of the prices people are asking for them on eBay. so my question to everyone is, how do you feel about the prices on these rare cards? do you think the prices are or the value of these cards going to hold and grow or go down as more and more of them each year are produced?, and which ones do you prefer, the duals or singles?

Seems like some of the first issues (05-06 or so) seem to hold more value than recent releases. I personally don't like the duals and I really dislike the booklets simply because they're too bulky for me.

First off, love your sig ;)

I think the response you will get from the majority is that shield cards will go the way of jersey cards and become ever less desirable due to overproduction. With Panini out of the game, UD may be able to keep shields scarce, but there is no guarantee of that. Ideally, UD would limit them as they have with the "Property Of" cards, which are still highly valued.

That being said, I do not own any shield cards but think there are some very attractive ones out there. The dual single sided shields from 05-06 and 06-07 The Cup are my favorite.

I've never understood the appeal of shield cards and would much rather have a colorful piece of logo that can be identified with the team. So, it's difficult for me to have an unbiased opinion as to their long-term staying power. It does seem that supply has yet to exceed demand on these particular type of cards, so I think the bottom will likely hold even as top $$ paid decreases.

I think there are some that will ALWAYS hold very high value and others that will be outperformed by low-numbered auto patches etc (think cards 5-25 with sweet swatches and hard signed autos of legendary players versus a scrub shield).

The annual Ultimate Rookie Collection Logo Shield 1/1 from UD Ultimate is the first one to come to mind. I think that card along with the UD Cup Black 1/1 are THE issues to own for any player collector of the modern-era (2005-06 and on).

Also, Dual Cup Shields with heavyweight pairings or with a desirable connection like Gretzky/Lemieux or Roy/Brodeur will also always hold a high value and command big money.

Then you have dual shields that will go for pennies on the dollar because you have a big stud with a total dud. (As a Kings fan the Kopitar/Patrick O'Sullivan version come to mind for me right away!)

Finally, you will have the anomaly, the shield, single or dual, of someone who you perceive to be not very valuable but that card is an absolute whale for someone. That said, they are likely the only market for it so there will not be very high value there either.

The exact reason I don't collect multiplayer cards, I'm way too fussy about player combinations. Exceptions to my rule are extremely rare.

How many 2007-08 Marian Gaborik cards had him paired with Petr Kalus for example, including Cup dual shields? Anybody hear a single word about Kalus since 2008? Pairing a veteran with a rookie in such a high end card very rarely works out.

And then there are absolutely epic, cornerstone-type pairings like Gaborik/Koivu for the Wild and Gaborik/Lundqvist for the Rangers.

We've been fairly selective as well for Austin's PC, especially with these type cards.

Kopitar/Getzlaf was far and away the best dual shield to date if you ask Austin. You have the two big centermen for the respective SoCal rivals, both perennial all star, scoring leader types. Incredible card.

I still think the one with my boy Rob Blake from Kopitar's rookie campaign was the dandy of the bunch.

It doesn't matter who the player is, what combination it is, or what the card is, the market shows that only about .001% of the modern cards out there retain or increase their value.

If you're looking to collect shields, that's awesome, but collect them for the love of the hobby, not for the potential investment return down the line.

Truth Rob, modern cards are NOT a good way to make money. I still think you can go into buying some cards knowing almost 100% you can turn a profit. Case breakers usually do alright if they get stuff out there quick and flip it but if it stagnates in their inventory for any amount of time the market is gone like that due to additional copies of the same card and/or the next product releasing.

Like I said, certain type cards of certain players will always be in demand, especially significant rookie year issues and the highest of the high end cards of superstars. But that's really it, it's extremely rare as you know and outside of that handful and the occasional anomaly, cards are a bust all around for profitability in this day and age due to over saturation and redundancy.

I personally love new ideas and fresh concepts to chase as well as some of the retro themed stuff brought back from the 90's. Of course there will always be the intermittent high end beast we all desire, but I really dig the nice inserts these days.

But to to stay on topic, again, there is a very small amount of shields that are worth any considerable money long-term or that hold their value. And I don't think more shields is a solution. Less is always more, demand exceeding quantity. Unfortunately Upper Deck has to appease it's customers and shields are a huge component of that, they're still the # 1 hit for 99% of the hobby. If they could ever come up with something that is annually as anticipated and desirable as shield cards it might help to back off the shields a little and balance things out.

Thoughts?

I agree with the less is more philosophy. Shields #/3 or /5 can't be good for the overall collectability and value and even multiple sets per year with a Shield 1/1 of certain player means that there are just more to go around...maybe this helps bring some prices in line for regular folk to have a chance at them but not for them holding some sort of continuous high value. Perhaps they should just be included in the Cup going forward.

I don't think they can do them just in the Cup because Ultimate is a shield-heavy product as well, notably the rookie shields which are the holy grail of rookie issues.

First off, collect what you like, don't worry about ROI.

Secondly, my rule on any card with a piece of jersey in it is, if I can purchase a full game used jersey for that price, why do I need a piece of cardboard with a swatch of jersey in it.

That being said the first dual shield cards I have of my PC guys is my favorite. Just like the first Black Diamond 1/1 of my PC guy is my favorite and the first mirror black ect. I still have the very first game jersey card I ever pulled from a pack in my PC. 2000-01 BAP Memorabilia Sandis Ozolinsh Jersey.

I will overspend, if that is even a word when it comes to my Anderson PC, for something that is unique to my PC. Once a second version of a card shows up I tend not to go that hard after it.

Craig Anderson/Chris Stewart dual shield max purchase price was a lot higher than the Spezza/Anderson dual shield I just picked up.

There is very little new stuff in this hobby and I reward the companies that try to make things that look and feel unique with my hobby dollars.

oh i do.
but after selling off my collection (which was pretty impressive) and having been gone for 7-8yrs, coming back i have really started to look at what i really think is collectable and what i truly find life long value in. namely growing up in the 80's / 90's watching my hero's flying on the ice i have come to realize collecting a player for the sake of collecting him and getting his cards cuz you are his fan is less then appealing for me when compared to say picking up a low printed quad auto with four of my hero's from that time.
as far as shields go i still find them really unique and even though i've owned a few years ago, they still have a certain appeal to them... an appeal that warrants $12,000 bones... no. that is where my curiosity comes into play... do people actually pay that or willing to pay those prices even though year after year more and more of them are produced.
thanks to everyone who has been commenting, it has been a shock coming back to the hobby and seeing those prices still really high for certain players, at the same time seeing the hobby has gotten smaller.

Hi Sean! Great to see an old friend come back to the hobby. Can't wait to see your new monster PC!

My favorite shield costed me 77x versus my 2nd favorite dual shield. Lol. Prices are everywhere.

05-06 Cup always king; no more GU rookie memorabilia after that. Booklet and dual sided shield cards are less popular. Super high end is still there, but super thin. Very high, high, mid, and low are all lesser than what you remember back in the day. Cheers.

I too am surprised at the decline in shield prices and don't understand why. I think they're an attractive design and when there's only one made, I consider it a true 1/1 card so it's something any player collector should want as a collection cornerstone. Perhaps it's a sign of people spending less on the hobby?

Stephen it's great to be back old friend!... although like we have already talked about, i'm not to happy with the condition the hobby is in... people leaving and fewer coming in to take there place... sad.
Netsinah, yes you are probably right. times could be tougher for most collectors out there, and the ones who have the high end guys demanding outrageous prices, like don't get me wrong i'm not expecting Crosby shields to be $1000 big ones, but asking anywhere from $12G's to $25G's.... Whoa....

I am one of those that has for most part left. I sold off all my hockey cup, basketball exquisite and all baseball and football at the last expo. I made out pretty well mostly due to the cup and exquisite. I left as i was seeing a decline in the market size for high end. I know its a hobby but when you have monster size high end collections than you have to be concerned about it. For me it used to be the quality of the card was nb ie its grade. But when gu and patches and shields the prices became insane. You can buy a game used player x jersey for less than some of those shield cards, to me thats just stupid. ( my opinion) If there is only one or two thats ok but there is too much of it.
Collect what you want but something is only worth what someone will pay. ANd yes people are paying mostly for 05 06 cup and a few canadian guys (price, toews and stamkos) But the rest is like a yoyo.

my 2 cents.

For me, it's the Dual Rookie Shields Auto #1/1 like the one in 2010-11 Cup. 2 Rookie Shields is better than 1.

I would rather have the 1/1 Dual RC Shields Auto than a Cup RC /99 or /249. Problem is those Rookie Shields are in personal PC.

i can see where you are coming from, but for me i need my cards to be Game-worn (which RC shields are not) and they have to be hard signed. if they are missing one of those i am not interested.

...and after a lot of thinking, for me it still comes down to.. there is only one shield per jersey and it's not like the players are wearing a new jersey every night. i know the Wings have two sets for the first half and two for the second (average about 10 games per jersey).
So when i think about it, shields are so much better then say the base card patch / auto #1/1's that the cup has or other #1/1's. after all, that patch can be in the same card 50 times or 100, even the tags can be inserted into 10-15 cards from one jersey. not the shields though. one jersey, one card.
