NHL Players will not participate in the 2018 Olympics

Go way better than that:

Any player who plays in the Olympics will be suspended for the rest of the regular season, the playoffs, and the first 41 games next year.

In top of that, for each game they play @ the Olympics, we will fine their NHL team $1 million USD.

let's play 'what if'

What if the NHL comes out and says 'any player under contract to an NHL team who plays in the Olympics will be suspended for the remainder of the season, regardless of if that player has his team's blessing.'

I don't think the NHL can suspend a player for that Randy. The NHL does not pay their salary, the team does, and if the team says he can go and the NHLPA agrees, I think Bettman is SOL.

This is a long, long time ago... but I believe there is precedent for it.

The 1994 Games. Glenn Anderson wanted to play for Canada, Canada wanted him on the team, and the Maple Leafs wanted to let him go. The NHL said "nope" and he wasn't allowed.

Hockey fans and the game loses in the end with this decision. However, if I'm an owner I would also think twice about sending my investment over there to compete under the current arrangement with the IOC. Not to mention the fact there is a nut job a few hundred miles to the north firing off missiles, testing nuclear weapons (while giving the UN the finger) and is still technically at war with the nation that I'm sending my investment to.

In other news, the management team of the South Korean National Hockey Team just breathed a sigh of relief knowing they won't set a record for most goals against in an Olympic game.

Ted Leonsis has my approval if he lets his guys play. Could be a rather depleted line-up for the Caps. It would be awesome if the Caps built up a nice cushion and then skated their AHL team for 3 weeks. And probably win a few of those games, to the humiliation of their opponents.

Do it, Ted.

I'm sure the NHL will be putting a rule in place between now and the Olympics stating who has the eligibility to leave for the Olympics or not. I'm not even sure if they have that authority, or if it's a case-by-case (team-by-team) basis, but I'm sure the league wouldn't like a flood of players leaving. I don't think they'll be that much players leaving (for the Olympics), but would the NHL not enforce a rule (only 1 or 2 players max) and risk that type of embarrassment ?

It should create a pile of tension between owners if some let their players go and others don't. Can you imagine if a team let a few guys go and then miss the playoffs by only a few points. Fans would be very unhappy.

These players threatening to go without permission can talk all they want but there are only two scenario's that will play out. Either this was all posturing by the NHL and they end up going OR they don't go and they block all players on an NHL roster from going.

Sorry Ovi but if the NHL no go then neither do you.

I can see both sides to the argument, but I favour the player's actually going. The player's should rebel and go anyway. It should be about the best in the world competing. Who would stop Ovy if he wanted to go? No one would or could!

Was wondering about this...

Isn't it a Standard Player Contract with the NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE, and not the individual team?

Yes, there's no doubt the actual team sets the salary and pays the salary, but the player is actually under contract to the NHL and its CBA. Even the team has limitations on contracts from the NHL.

If this is the case, the NHL could dictate things, regardless of what any individual owner says.

Anyone know for sure? I'm definitely not a contract expert. :)
