I have a very basic question I'm hoping someone can answer.
I am intrigued by the $8,000+ bid on the Roy/Brodeur NHL shield card on ebay in Magootz's post, and have seen other products in the past featuring these NHL patches...

I understand that these are 1/1's, but to me it's more meaningful to have a piece of the player's TEAM patch rather than a generic NHL logo. I am a fan of "teams", not of the "league" itself.

Where do these shields come from and why are they so desirable?

Thanks in advance for helping this old dog learn new stuff....

The shields come from the bottom of the jersey - around the hem.

Obviously there is one per shirt - which explains the rarity.

In most other sports collectors go nuts for the NBA Logoman or NFL Shield - but it used to be that hockey collectors weren't that interested in them. That was until UD started sticking auto shields in Premier & Ultimate and then dual shields in Ultimate and The Cup.

Fleer Hot Prospects has them too - but from photoshoot jerseys, so nowhere near as desirable

I'm with Michael on this one, I fail to see what all the fuss ia about over a logo patch that is on every jersey, how is that rare? I understand they are 1/1's but I would also rather have a nice jersey swatch or patch than these things. Okay all you folks that love these things let me have it with both barrels, lol.

Think of it like this...

How many Brodeur game used jerseys does Upper Deck get in a season? 1 MAYBE 2? (players typically wear 9 jerseys total and its expensive to purchase real gamers, hence UD probably manages only 2 at the most).

So how many regular jersey cards can 1 gamer make? A few thousand? How many patch cards can a gamer make? 100 maybe? How many logo cards can 1 gamer make? Thats right... only 1.

So although the LOGOs are on every jersey, Upper Deck doesn't OWN every jersey. They get a couple a year (at most) hence the logo can only be found on 1 or 2 cards.

I can see the novelty of this sort of thing, but when the price gets up into the stratosphere like this one you have to begin to consider what it would cost to own both shields *and* the rest of a game-worn jersey of both of these fellas! I'm sure 8 Gs would take you pretty far towards this purchase, no?

Ernie, you have put it in a better perspective and I see what you mean about the scarcity of the sheilds. I still like a nice patch better, even if its not as rare, it has to look good too for me to get excited about and quite frankly the sheilds doing nothing for me in that regard. Having said that I do have a new outlook on why people do chase these cards.
Thanks.
Dan.

Thanks guys for enlightening me on these logos.
I'm still with Dan, though... I'd rather have a multi-colour swatch or patch from the player's jersey than a generic league shield.
I'm not particularly a fan of the NHL itself (they're putting out a good product on the ice in spite of themselves), but at least now I have a clearer understanding of the rarity of these patches.

Ryan, although I agree with you, that the price of one of these cards could buy a real Game-Worn, I guess the thrill of the rip and the subsequent hunt is part of the allure. Talking to Julie yesterday and reading your recent posts... seems you've had a good time and REAL good luck ripping recently, too.... :D

Me, Michael, and Dan on an island ;)

I understand the rarity, but the visual effect is lost on me. Give me a 3 colour patch piece with lots of curves, seams, and colour contrast....that's the kind of lure the gets me every time :p

And besides, I have yet to own a single 1of1, so shield cards don't even make my wantlist.

I'm kinda on the fence with this one. I'd love to own a Parise Shield, but at $500-600 I could buy or be well on my way to buying a real ZP gamer.

I guess it comes down to what kind of collector you are, of a player or of a player's cards. There is certainly legitimacy in both. I personally collect cards because I can't afford to collect jerseys on a student budget.
