Nice team by team analysis on salary cap

ESPN story did a pretty nice job of pointing out who is where with players under contract for the 05-06 season. Linketey-link

I haven't been following the contracts all that much, and I was surprised to see how some teams are in biiig trouble, while others should make some hay. All in all, a good read.
 
Definitely interesting stuff. Too bad upon restarting, the league couldn't be run like a fantasy draft. Any player not already under contract, gets cut loose, and a draft order set up and let those players fall where they may. A goofy idea, but it would sure make for some interesting lineups! No contracts to be decided until after all players are assigned to teams! Fantasy hockey is so much easier than real life hockey! :D
 
An interesting read, but did anyone else notice a disturbing trend? The writer seems to think that every player who is likely to retire, is actually going to return. He seems to think that Messier, Francis, Yzerman, Andreychuk are all gonna dust off the mothballs and suit up again. The only one I could see even remotely close to doing that is Stevie Wonder, although personally, I think he has nothing left to prove, so I think he might consider hang up the skates. (I'll prolly get lynched for that comment)

Regardless, I am anxious to see what Colorado, Montreal and Phoenix all do this year. And I think this could be the year that the Leafs start their freefall from their perch.

I agree, the writer of this piece definitely made a number of questionable assumptions. After reading it, you have to reallllly like your chances of adding some quality talent and still coming in at the cap number if you are a Flyers fan...which I ain't (stinkin' Flyers...:) ).

I agree on Yzerman, especially since he's in as rough shape physically as he is. Sooner or later, you have to start thinking about life after the playing career. Being able to walk should be pretty high on the list. I could see Francis or Andreychuk being back, both of their careers have been on a steady albeit lower level for a while now and could keep going. Messier on the other hand, is like a zombie in any horror movie you care to mention. Dead but just doesn't know enough to lay down. He's been coasting downhill for ten years already. Call it a career!

Oh yeah! That is the face of someone who could be looking you right in the eyes, kicking you where you really don't want to be kicked, and all you could do is ask her to do it again! lol.
By the way, did you ever make up a list of what Tanguay parallels and inserts you are still hunting? I've got a couple of stores in Saskatoon I can check out for you now I'm on holidays, and I'll probably be going to Calgary in the next couple of weeks too, so could do a check there while I go Fedorov hunting! Let me know.

Thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. Local news here in Detroit says Stevie already has told friends he wants to come back so hopefully the talk is true.
Another thing is I don't see how any teams would be in big trouble since the league is letting teams buy out players with no hit on the cap! Potentially any player that is being "over paid" by certain teams is just going to get cut loose. Putting any team in salary cap trouble out of said trouble. Teams like the Wings who will cut loose Hatcher/Whitney/possibly McCarty lop of 10-11 million toward that years salary. Another example would be the Rangers chopping off Holik/Kasper and one of the other overpaid guys and they are under the cap and ready to spend again.
 
The buyout clause is going to save pretty much every team, and the teams that have GM's that can accurately judge tallent will be fine this year. It is going to be interesting to see some of the big guys fall off the map. Will Detroit spend too much out of respect for Yzerman and be too poor to keep Datsyuk and Zetterberg, or will they sign all three and have nothing left for a supporting cast? You know Sather will spend a fortune on someone like Guerin and finish in last again.

I actually find myself being more excited about this season than I have been in a long time. It is going to be fun to see some new teams rise to prominence and some others fall from the map.
