How much of Nick Suzukis value in the hobby is due to the fact he plays in Montreal?
If you have to ask you likely haven't watched. His vision and hockey IQ are clearly superior to those who were selected around him in the draft.
I think this statement is a complete crock! If he was on Florida the value would be largely different! I have watched him play quite a bit and I also collect cards and where a person plays may be even more important than his ability!!!
Definitely not complete crock. Prior to this season, he jumped into a struggling team and provided an offensive boost. He played very well in the play in rounds and actually made management re-adjust plans moving forward. Prior to that, he OWNED the minors. His vision and skillset were all on display. I won't even get into his progress over this past season and playoffs.
So complete crock? Absolutely not. Boosted? Mildly. Of course location affects price due to fan base. However, he's not a 25 year old 3rd liner. He's being developed as a future top center for the Habs. He's still on his ELC and has only trended upwards.
Put him on any non-original six team with the same production, and his value isn’t even half of what it is right now.
There is a definite Toronto/Montreal exponent that affects values. There are plenty of fans that will pick his card up for just being on the team. The factor has been seen many times in the past. Tavares & Kessel in Toronto, Domi & Weber in Montreal are good examples of players who have come to these teams and seen a boost of interest in them and their cards.
Now for rc’s that start their careers with these teams, Suzuki being drafted by Golden Knights, but getting his actual start in Montreal...yeah, there is a hype, a “bump”. Charles Hudon is a great example that had the hype but didn’t pan out and he still has the Montreal value attached. Kotkaniemi had the hype coming into his rc year, value was inflated because of his potential. It has taken a few years to develop but he is hitting his stride and deserved value, mind you, he is also being outperformed by other draftees but still has higher values...”no bump at all” (wink wink, nudge nudge). For example, Joel Farabee, drafted later in the 1st round, only needs to score 3 points in the next 64 games to match Kotkaniemi’s career points total. Farabee’s value? 1/3, maybe?...oh, and Quinn Hughes is in teh same class...30 more points in 50 less games...but Jasper has twice as many goals as Quinn (11g). Hype? Nope, none at all.
Gotta say though, Poehling looked super hot when he debuted, but Suzuki looks to be the best...aside from Caufield, who will be a superstar.
Since the modern era, investing in any Habs rookie has not been financially prudent in the long run. Can you time peaks and troughs? Sure. But overall, stay away. Caufield will have an extremely hard time living up to hobby hype especially if next year is a "weak" RC year.
