No more UD HG??

Hello gang,

I was looking at the new UD Series 1 cards and found a Cam Fowler Platinum Exclusives /10. Im assuming they changed the High Glossy to that now? I wonder why UD would change it? They look the exact same as the Exclusives /100. Doesn't make much sense to change the name from HG to Platinum Exclusives?

It definitely shows a lack of creativity.

I don't mind ditching the clunky "High Gloss" set name, so why not change it to something more interesting?

Why not a holofoil version of the 20th Anniversary cards for a #/10 parallel instead?

do you guys happen to know how many version of each card are out? i am thinking of possibly doing a master set of it, and i am just trying to piece it together, but the UD site does not have the checklist at all

each base i know has a exclusive, and a platinum exclusive. then i also know that there is the 20th anniversary, but do these also have a exclusive and a platinum?

No parallels of the 20th Anniversary set exist as far as I know. Each base card has an exclusive /100, a platinum exclusive /10 and a 20th anniversary. That's it. That being said, let me know if you're planning on building the master set. I busted more than 2 cases and could help you get a good head start

Maybe it's just me, but I'm kind of sad to see the "HG" label disappear. That was one parallel I had a love/hate relationship with, and for the last 2 years I've owned at least 150+ copies of the Young Guns and base versions. I will definitely NOT be attempting the set this time around, but will probably pick up the odd one if I can find any good deals.

HMM...i could be way out to sea on this but...here's my personal thought...

UD recently(well slightly over a year ago) seems to have either switched the company they use for printing or has just choosen to use a lower quality printing method, anybody notice the lack of "shine" on cards these days? that's because they don't use that nice surface finish they used to use on everything...my guess...just a way to cut costs and pad the wallet....

anyways, point being that the method they use now does'nt have that "high gloss" surface finish....hence why i think they've done away with the "high glossy" insert and changed it to a colours game...

another thing they've switched is the company foil marking on the back of cards, anyone notice you don't see the gold foil anymore? all silver....even for autographs now....again my guess is to cut cost for whatever reason...

and NO before you start thinking i take cards to seriously....that's not it...it was just a random thing that i picked up on one day and compared a bunch of cards together to comfirm...

not ranting, i think either way the cards are fine, just explaining why i think that insert subset bit the dust...

I could care less what they call the cards. I just love collecting /10 sets! It's a real challenge to get all ten.

I do not think it's a coincidence that Panini has a Glossy set in Score and UD does not have a High Gloss or HG Glossy set in UD this year. My guess is that this may be a competitive situation. Much like Topps "owns" the rights to the term "Refractor"... Perhaps Panini now has the exclusive rights to the term Glossy...

If you've ever held, for example, a 09-10 HG and 09-10 base card next to each other, you can tell the difference. The HG cards have a glossier finish for sure. They reminded me most of the early-00s Stadium Club sets.

I'll be interested to see how it looks this year. If indeed they did away with adding the glossy coating on the #/10 cards, it probably does save some cash...

it's not just the high glossy insert that they stopped using the gloss on, it's for everything...08/09 cup is a bad example as some cards have the gloss finish some of them have the more dull(my guess less expensive) finish....but if you compared 07/08 cup or any release 08/09(minus cup and bap) or before to a card you get nowadays you'll notice a major difference in the finish and quality of the cardboard and such...

i don't want to come across like a rant, but i personally like the older style better since it gives the photo some extra "pop" power...but to each thier own
