I'm sorry. I hate to complain, but I can't believe that OVY doesn't have a single autograph card in 09 Ice. The RC class is mediocre at best, so the least they can do is put the 2 top stars in Crosby and Ovy in products like Ice. But I guess, getting him to sign a few more cards was too much to ask! Unbelievable. Anybody else feel this way?

It could be Ovechkin's choice too, maybe he's just getting tired of signing cards. The folks from Upper Deck mentioned in the chat that night that a player approached them at the All-Star festivities and informed them he would no longer have the time to sign and they were disappointed in the decision, maybe Ovechkin was the player in question? I know from seeing videos of him at signings he looked far from enthusiastic to be there.

Can anyone confirm this? Yikes, if it is true.

The second part of the recent chat transcript, found here, has the blurb from Mr. Carlin about the player telling them he wouldn't have the time to sign any more. He didn't name the player, but I wouldn't want to come out and say that one of the best players in the world wouldn't be featured in any more products either.

Anybody have the sources to get to the bottom of this?

...By the sheer number of redemptions for auto'd product, suggests MANY players no longer feel "obligated" to sign for UD anymore, and who can blame them! I don't like to work for free either, or wait months for payment.

...Sad thing is ,that we really don't know who's signing those stickers/cards anyway {Auto-pens/wives/girlfriends/parents/}, and when they do get the sticker sheet signed, the morons, more often then not ,put em on UPSIDE DOWN.

Being a player collector, I have 50 some odd autos of my player's autograph, but the only one that really means anything is the first and only one I got signed in person.

it might just be for this product. Ovy seems to love being the star of the show and signing autos for fans is something he's always seemed to enjoy. if anything, i figured it was probably lundqvist who told UD he no longer had the time to sign. just received a big contract and hasn't signed for UD or ITG in the past year or 2 now.

it might just be for this product.

That's what I said about Gaborik too when I noticed he didn't have any autographs in the early 2008/09 products. Then it was another, and another, and still hasn't signed since :D

This is speculation of course, and we would need to see what cards actually surface in upcoming products before we can know for sure. Seems like a strange coincidence though..

and when they do get the sticker sheet signed, the morons, more often then not ,put em on UPSIDE DOWN.

"More often than not" would imply that the majority of sticker autos appear in products upside down, which is false. For that matter...besides your card, I haven't seen any other upside down stickers this year, and none since a couple Cam Neely cards in seasons past. That's hardly "More often than not."

Look, having worked quality control in the past, your sample sizes can't be 100% for products as large as Upper Deck Series 1 and Series 2. Every time you call into a CS organization and are told "Your call may be monitored for quality purposes," it doesn't mean your call's going to be used in the QA environment. Is it a fair assumption that just because 100 (a random number) Signature Sensations autos ended up on QA's plate and all of them were placed on correctly that all 7500 of them are right side up? No...but you sometimes have to put your products forth based on what you've been provided and have case studies of.

I see Ovechkin's auto is all over 08-09 SP Authentic, so maybe it was just an ICE thing

http://www.magazine-exchange.com/info/pdf/2008-09 NHL SP Authentic Checklist (Version 3).pdf

Remember, though, early checklists don't always reflect the final product. The early versions of the Ice sell sheets had an Ovechkin Glacial Graphs on them if I recall correctly. Now, that's just a mock-up obviously, but perhaps an ominous sign. Recall also that the early checklists of the Habs Centennial set had dual Kostitsyns and Rollie Melanson was supposed to be on autos with Carey Price as a dual and with Price & Patrick Roy on a triple.

That auto checklist is waaaaaay smaller than the initial. I remember Kobe & Lebron being on the initial checklist and obviously neither is still there.

The members of Rush as well as Gordon Downie were cut from the checklist too, even the fossil checklist was cut down. I guess after millions of years dinosaurs still can't get their bones in to UD on time.

Looks like the following (non-hockey) people are no longer on the checklist:

Alex Lifeson
Dan Gable
Geddy Lee
Gord Downie
Johnny Chan
LeBron James
Mike Weir
Mike Myers
Neal Peart

that's sad that they couldn't get those guys.

But I do know for a fact Parise stopped signing half way through last year. He showed up on the single BAP and then was out of the dual and triple and he hasnt had an auto since.
