Nonis gone!?

If there was any team in the league that needed to do something at the deadline it was definitely the Canucks. Nonis failed, subsequently his team failed and the writing was on the wall.

At least Nonis didn't go out and deal a bunch of their good young players like Kesler, Burrows, Edler, etc for quick fixes.
 
I think this was a BAD move. Nonis had the right mind set for the team. It was the players who failed this season not the management. Too many injury's and asides from Kesler and Burrows everyone else on the canucks had a worse season then the previous (obviously excluding rookies) I would have let Nonis stay, let go of Naslund, signed someone good up front and given the C to Mitchell and we would be good to go. I hope they get someone good to replace him. maybe we can get Burke back man that would be insane.

While not unexpected, the timing was quite early. I guess they figure they should have someone in place for the draft & FA barrage. He made the trade of the century to get Luongo, but did bugger all since. You can blame Naslund all day long, but in the end, given the lack of scoring by Naslund & the twins, Nonis should have done something radical at the trade deadline.

I'm happy the ownership is interested in a winning franchise. I wonder if they'll clean house and get rid of Tambellini too, or promote him. Interesting days ahead for the Canucks!

Take a look at Nonis's record he is 41 games over .500 in just three seasons. Twice we missed the playoffs by 1 point cause the Sedins are not good in clutch situations and the rest of the team came up dry in the stretch runs.
Nonis sat back at the deadline and saved us our future for not dealing off our young talent for someone who may have helped us into the first round at best. I really think there were many people to blame asides Nonis. Also he did sell out everygame he was GM for.

Luongo was not in the game for months. His planning for his child could not have been worse. We were hit hard with injury's all year and underprodeuction from the players we expected to produce. If I was Nonis I would be pissed. Everyone knows that if any years is meant for the canucks its next year. With players like Kesler and the Sedins locked up for a good afordable price with TONS of capspace to play with in the off season. I think they should have let nonis have one more year to see what he could have put together. I am worried someone is gonna come in and make some dumb moves to try to win over the fans. We'll see, but all I can say is we better make the playoffs in 08-09 or its strictly Giants, Moose and Salmon Kings for me.
 
I'm not a fan of this firing, I also am glad that he didn't overpay and mortgage the teams future for short-term (in my belief) limited playoff success. I'm curious to see who they hire.

Not good enough... oh, and it's not Nonis selling out the games.

As for the Luongo comment... you've obviously never had a wife that had problems with pregnancy, otherwise you wouldn't have said such dumb thing. When your wife is pregnant, she's gone home to be with family because she has difficulties, you don't think of much else. And as for "planning"... well, I won't go there as I'd probably have to ban myself for my comments. Suffice it to say that I disagree with your assessment.

Nonis pulled off the trade of the century. Beyond that, he's done bugger-all other than keep Kesler, Burrows & Edler in Canucks uniforms, but I dare say that was Aquilini telling him not to trade them for rental players. He KNEW they were having problems scoring and had injury problems, so why not do something about it? Washington got Huet for a song... there were probably other deals to be had out there. Regardless it's spilled milk, and we're onto a better future.
 
Oh, one other thing... other than maybe three or four games, Luongo is the ONLY reason the Canucks weren't sucking hind nipple with Tampa & LA for first pick. He kept the team in the game 70 of 74 games, and it's the scoring that was the problem.
 
Not to mention the fact that noone (not even the fans) blamed Luongo for the pregnancy.. there's nothing to blame.. everyone understands that even though the team is built around him, family is more important than his job.

With all the injuries that happened, the team still managed to adapt to it well.. why? well the main reason is obviously Roberto Luongo. The Canucks weren't winning games because Luongo took a couple days off or the Canucks had injured players, it was because we didn't have scoring. And no, Brendan Morrison's injury did not affect the scoring either. It was still that bad even when he came back.
 
Luongo didn't steal a game in the second half of the season not one.

As for the pregnancy thing I dont care what anyone says, the luongo's have been together for years and I dont think she just "got pregnant" and when you make close to seven million dollars a year and you carry a whole city on your shoulders as the center piece of its only true franchise you shouldn't be having babies during the most important part of the season. It really is that simple to me, you have to step up tp the plate 110% of the time when you are making that kind of money. Luongo is still my favorite goalie and one of my favorite canucks but that was poor planning on his part. You cant say he wasn't a huge part of the Canucks falling apart, he was pulled in what 3 out of the last 4 or 5 games, unexceptable.

Nonis, and most true fans, all knew this wasn't gonna be the canucks year and that is why no one was dealt or aquired at the deadline. They hoped to scrape into the playoffs and who really expected them to go further then last year?
Nonis was gonna make some moves in the off season for sure I just hope his replacement doesn't do anything to dumb.


The Canucks just need a forward or two, a healthy defence, its young players to step to the plate and a good 'ol Canadian Captain and things should be ok.
 
I'm a little disappointed by this myself. While three years is enough time to give a GM to see if he's turning the ship from an iceberg, a Western Conference outsider like myself sees him as having done well - poaching Luongo from Florida, handling the Kesler offer sheet with a bit more class than Brian Burke (regardless of your view of offer sheets), did great at the 07 trade deadline, and traded Matt Cooke for "a younger, bigger version of himself" as I've seen it described this year. I also liked the deal for Ryan Shannon, who at least could crack the Vancouver lineup.

I read that Alain Vigneault suffered a sort of Jack Adams nomination hangover after 1999-00, and was canned in Montreal. Could anyone argue the same thing this year, after he won? A situation with a massive goalie distraction arguably cost Paddock his job in Ottawa, could Nonis and Vigneault's failure to plan for Luongo's hiatus be an issue?

I tend not to see much of the West, so I was surprised and confused by this. I thought he did OK.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - Luongo's personal life is out of bounds. His life away from hockey is far more important than game 78 or 79 of the regular season, regardless of the standings. For you to blame him and his wife for getting pregnant when she did, is classless and ignorant on your part. Leave his personal life out of it. If I was Luongo, and read this kind of garbage, I'd be begging Canucks management for a trade. Today.

As for the hockey part of this thread, if the Canucks need Luongo to, as you say it "carry a whole city on your shoulders as the center piece of its only true franchise", then the Canucks are in a lot more trouble than you think. And the firing of Nonis is just the beginning.

Injuries to the D-men this season were an obvious issue but where has the scoring been? This team has had problems putting the puck in the back of the net for a few seasons now, especially in crunch time. Nonis seemed to be building from the net out and just never got to the part of his plan that would have improved the forwards. The D looks solid enough to me and no one can question Luongo.

I'm with Bruce here. The teams downfall was the lack of scoring and secondary scoring.... which could have been addressed this summer.

Vancouvers success last season (when they made the playoffs) was all smoke and mirrors. Take away Luongo and they would have been bottom 5 two years in a row.
