Novel approach to faked patches

Interesting way to approach this card. Thoughts?

Crosby Cup RPA

That it’s a freaking tragedy that someone butchered the most iconic card of the last 40+ years.

Great that it has been identified, but after the Gretzky rookie, this would be it for me

Sigh

Pacman

Edit, ok that doesn’t really answer your question. I don’t know if this is the owner that butchered the card or it has passed through hands. Regardless, I think someone will buy it at some price. Only way to market it at this point

My thoughts, he said it's a fake so it's TAINTED. It'll never be as it was intended when UD packed it out so for me, honestly, it's worthless.

This screams to me "Hey, lowlifes, do what you want with the cards, ruin them, just claim it".

Would definitely help prices of authentic cards though!

I'm okay with this. Yes, I suspect some future seller will try to pass it off as legit or won't know what had happened to it, but it's basically either that or destroy the card, and I'm against destroying the card.

Someone will buy this, even if it's a faked patch.

I know people buy notably altered/trimmed cards just to to say they have a certain card for their collection, so I do think there is still a market for this card. Would it be as big as before? No (you could even argue the sheer number of suitors would increase at the reduced price), but someone will want the card for their collection, regardless of the fake patch. As long of the seller makes it known and isn't trying to pass it off as something it's not, then I think it's okay.

Aside from that, I think it's a shame that someone would fake a patch on a Crosby like that. So sad.

Maybe UD will cut a deal for it and replace the patch with a legit one... do a whole story about the saved Crosby RPA and insert it in a future buy back product... cheaper than buying one that hasn't been tampered with... and the only group with the POSSIBILITY of redeeming the value of the card.

Chew on that one...

...I don't know why, but if it were a movie it would star Keanu Reeves.

Original patch is from a "Photoshoot" jersey. The other is from someones closet.

To me the memorabilia/patch piece is the same!

It’s a Crosby Cup rookie Erik, so, allegedly, it’s game used material. But I hear you. Hope you’re well tiny!

If you’re buying this card for the patch, you’ve already lost. Thankfully the hobby is moving away from “game used/Foot Locker bought” cards.

I don't really "do" graded cards, but should Beckett have noted it as altered or did it just slip through their grading process as such?

As to the question, being upfront about the (lack of) legitimacy is the honest thing to do. It will not sell for anything close to that asking price, but I have to wonder if it won't get snatched up by someone who will sit on it several years and try to reintroduce it as pack-pulled.

Well, so long as we all remember this post, and someone keeps a screen shot or something of the ebay listing, we can nail that person to the wall when the time comes!

Jordan Green PMG with altered mention on PSA slab sold for 250k+. People are still paying crazy premiums on BGS Black Labels that the population is 80% from the same guy , Joe `Black Labels` Clemmons. Even after the trimming scandal expose , people are still paying premiums on trimmed `gem mints`. Grading company`s never add that much business (1 millions+ cards in backlog before the pandemic). Still a Crosby Cup in this world where authenticity dosent means much. (Card cleaning, trimming , soaking , patch switching)
