Nylander: 6 years, $6.9 AVG

Glad it’s over, now for the next two weeks we just have to hear all the non leafs fans say how much they overpaid. People need to look at what the young players are signing for, he is right on the mark. I laughed at Brian Burke, he is still so bitter, what an idiot.

As a reference point, that is 600,000 more per year than Nathan MacKinnon is getting paid in Colorado, a guy that was a Hart Trophy finalist last year and looks to be perennially.

Yeah, that's a good deal Toronto! :duh:

Do you think the Aves would get Nate for that today though? NO!!! Nate is much better now than when he signed his current contract.

Let's be honest though... MacKinnon signed before his monster season. He was putting up about 50 points on average at the time, and only put up 53 points a year into his new contract. Obviously now he's a $10M ++ player now, so great deal for the Avs. Best contract in the league.

Nylander is still a much better contract than the almost 36 year old Kolvachuk LA contract lol.

Leafs are gonna have 28 mill tied up in 3 guys, and then there's the rest of tavares' contract too. Is he (Nylander) getting traded?

If you believe that a 22 year old (like Nylander) will still improve, and you believe the cap will continue to climb - this deal will look like a bargain in a couple of years.

An easy team for me to bring up is the Oilers. They signed Hall, Eberle, and RNH all for 6m a season. When those deals were signed, people talked about them like they were nuts.

Today? Hall is one of the best bargains in the league, RNH would probably get a small raise if he were to go to free agency. Eberle is probably a tad overpaid, but 6m isn't crazy.

I still dont see how the Leafs can spend half their cap on 4 forwards long term though. My bet is Nylander is dealt before 2020, and maybe earlier. As it is, I'm betting Marleau spends next season on Robidas Island.

True but c'mon, he was a #1 overall pick, a Calder winner and people get paid on potential as well, everyone knows that. If a player is that high of a pick and performs fairly reasonably (he did) then I still think his contract was a tad low.

While true, that was a clear troll. Keep it professional "mod"!

These big contracts are team killers. Leafs are now Cap poor and have the two biggest leaf contract negotiations in the past 20 years coming up. I think it’s obvious that someone will have to be moved or the leafs better start finding really good players with cheap contracts.

I still think Nylander being traded is a possibility. Not right now, but if he performs well and the right offer comes on the table, I could see it. Especially once all the other big contracts get signed and the Leafs get less & less cap space.

Still, I'm glad Nylander signed and will be in a Maple Leafs uniform once again. Such a fun team to watch!

Not a bad deal. Cap will go up again (probably) and 6.9 isn't that much for a potential top line player. Thank goodness he finally signed. I have been carrying him on my fantasy team since the draft as dead weight. It is like getting an early Christmas present.

Leivo got traded to Vancouver this morning to free up a roster spot for Nylander. Sad to see him go.

Me too, he was a good team player. Glad to see him get a chance with the Canucks, I think he'll fit in nicely with that young core.
Dan.

:(
great
they'll have a hard time to move him now..

spent to much on him..

Very very wrong.

The way the contract is structured is a lot of the real money of the contract will be paid by July 1 of 2019 meaning that from July 2 2019 and on Nylander would only cost the Leafs or any team trading for him about 4.9 million in real $$$$ a season. What would a team give up to get a player of Nylanders caliber and it only costs you about $4.9 million a year in real money. The Leafs set themselves up to get back a very good return IF they feel they have to move his contract down the line.

The Leafs are scary, period. Will be interesting to see what they do come playoff time but for right now it's a monster team. Playoffs a different ballgame though, but will be fun to watch!

This is 100% correct. I think this is a great signing for other teams that they got Nylander signed in this range, as opposed, to the 8.5M that Edmonton signed Draisaitl at. The Leafs managed to get the AAV comp, as opposed to the % of cap comp. So that's a win for the team.

It should also be noted that the only Modified No-Trade Clause is in the final year of the deal. This will likely be the best bargain of a deal between the four (Tavares, Nylander, Matthews, Marner) is all said and done. In that instance it will also be the easiest contract to move, if the Leafs feel they need to move someone out.

Good money for Willy, and the number is trade-able. About 28 teams in the league would gladly have Nylander at that price.
