I purchased these 2 cards on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320795354627
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320795359758

I looked at the back side of the scan (the blank side) and couldn't wrap my head around the fact that the edges were not perfectly straight. Then I turned the card around and realized they were cut outs from the box bottoms because of the crooked edges and the black outline surrounding the card due to bad cutting.

*edit* and now I realize from his images, the 2 edges are cropped out so that they appear like they are perfectly straight.

Now, I don't mind box bottom cut outs, but nowhere in his description or title does it mention that these were cut outs and not actual pack pulled cards. I could only assume that they were pack pulled (and at the time never even considered that these would be cutouts in the first place).

I just sent the seller this email.

Hi, I purchased a Taylor Hall and Sidney Crosby OPC Retro Blank back from you. Upon inspection I noticed these are not TRUE blank backs. These are in fact cut out from the box bottom and not the TRUE blank back cards available in packs of O-Pee-Chee. I can tell because: 1. these cards do not have perfectly straight edges and 2. the Crosby card shows the black outline surrounding the card that was found on the bottom of the O-Pee-Chee product. Your listings fail to mention this and therefore these cards are counterfeit and your listing is fraudulent. Please refund me my money for these 2 cards.

Now, I'm not accusing this seller just yet as he may be just unaware as me, but the fact that this guy had a dozen or so blank backs seems fishy to me. One way or another, however you dice it, this is still a scam IMO whether or not the seller was aware or not.

This is just to let people know and learn from my mistakes.

That said, what should I do? Do I contact eBay anyways even if he refunds me my money? Do I even stand a chance at recouping my money?

As an eBay Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
At this point you're almost as far ahead to chalk it up as a loss and move on. If you want a refund you'd have to return them as per paypal guidelines which requires tracking. For what you'll pay for US to Canada tracked shipping it's hardly worth the work.

For the record the pics don't really look like he was hiding much as they are crooked as heck. Still doesn't justify the listing but people need to actually look/read auctions before just jumping in - it saves a ton of headache.

I think whether you go after the refund through PayPal or not, you need to leave negative feedback for the cards, and get EBay involved in the fact these are misleading listings.

if you are interested in entire panels from the bottom of boxes this year, i have 4 of the toews-luongo-bergeron-hall ones, and one of the crosby-kane-st. louis-price ones. would let ya have them for the price of shipping. shoot me a PM if you are interested. they are all in tact and uncut.

Had that happen to me once before, that's why I stay away from blank backs now.

He posts how he got screwed on eBay and you figure he wants your box bottoms? :dizzy:

This seller DEFINITELY deserves a negative whether you get your refund or not. He obviously saw an opportunity to scam people

Yea, I sent this guy a message when I noticed his Giroux blank back looked different from the one I had. This was his response

"its a retro card and its blank on the back i was given card not knowing it was from a box bottom.
now i can not change it. if you do not want it then dont bid on it. if you know this then other people would know to.
if they want it they will bid on it. it still is a card. next time it will be right. i still dont know why you are crying
about it. just dont bid on it!"

He obviously lied about not being able to change it since there were no bids on it at the time, and he relisted the ones that didn't sell on the first run the same way.
So yea, he is definitely trying to scam people.

I say negative all the way

Uhh jerk move with this post for sure.

I feel for you. I was bidding on a Toews blank back when I noticed that just like the you stated, it was in fact the box bottom. I wish you the best of luck and hope eveything works out for you!

warsaw, I am not interested in owning them, but perhaps you could take some pictures of them for me so I could use them to show eBay/Paypal that they are "promotional images" on the bottom of the packaging and not the official UD/OPC pack inserted item he claims them to be.

I want to nail this guy for selling counterfeit products.

Oh absolutely neg this guy - any of you here that got these from him should be making the rest of the potential buyers aware.

Wow...balls or what? :(

Ok so after my initial email to him in the first post, he wrote back to me saying:

yes these are real cards they are listed in Beckett books so that means they are real cards

So I sent him this doozy:

I showed a friend the listings for these 2 items I won from you for what I thought were official pack inserted O-Pee-Chee/Upper Deck blank back trading cards. He's an expert and he looked at the cards and pointed out to me that these are simply pictures cut by hand from the bottom of the packaging (box) of the O-Pee-Chee product the trading cards came in and NOT official O-Pee-Chee/Upper Deck pack inserted trading cards. He pointed out the crooked and uneven edges as well as the black border/trim evident on the Crosby scan which does not occur on the real card and only occurs on the bottom of the box these cards come in as a promotional feature. Also, the backs of the true card is a slightly different color than in your scans. He also looked around and noticed other subsequent listings from you for similar cards to have the notation as "box bottoms" implying they were in fact cut out images from the bottom of the box, yet my listings never had that distinction even though the images, upon closer inspection, show they are.

The more I look at the scans you provided (and your other "blank back" listings) the more obvious it is that these are home made, hand cut cards and not the official pack inserted cards... which your item description fails to mention. I do find it strange that your other auctions for similar cards later on do mention "B.B" or "box bottom" in them but mine don't.

The fact that your auction asserts that these are official O-Pee-Chee/Upper Deck products but instead are hand cut copies means they are in fact counterfeit and what you are doing is fraudulent.

I will gladly send them back for a refund and I will also notify eBay of fraud. My expert has provided me pics of the boxes and their bottoms which I will show eBay

He has refunded me my money and has appologized. He states that he purchased a box of 50,000 cards and these were in it and hopes he doesn't lose me as a customer. He also wants me to let him know if I see anything wrong with his future auctions

I don't believe him just due to the nature of his other auctions and responses to other people in this thread.

Hopefully you all learn from my mistakes.

$20 for a Crosby Blank Back and $4 for a Taylor Hall? I was flippin' ecstatic!

Oh well, if it's too good to be true...

"B.B." doesn't do a thing for making his items legit for obvious reasons.

hopefully I also see a negative on his feedback when I get home...as of right now he's still at 100%

Kev

Good thing not all the players have box bottoms or everyone would be trying fake these.

umm, frank and "dunkie" (whatever your name is)... wasn't sure if he wanted the cards for his PC or just buying them for the fact that they were inexpensive blank backs. i obviously wasn't trying to make any money, as they were free to me (in my eyes) and i offered them for the price of shipping ONLY. just tryin' to help out another member... too bad you saw it as a "jerk move"...
