Musings from a biased fan on the first game......
1) When in the Lord's name did Devorski and O'Halloran become the 'best ' refs the league has to offer??? I realize that some of the 'calls/non-calls' are directed from the league office - but these two are no-where near the top guys in the league. And if the league wanted to show off the 'NEW' speed of the NHL - why are they allowing off-man interference so much. I see players impeding progress to both ends of the ice. It almost seems as if they are afraid that Detroit won't ever give up the puck if they called it.
2) Remember I'm biased....... If I hear one more time from Engbloom, Melrose and company that Pittsburgh needs to play together and hit more and do this and do that I'm going to throw up. To me it really looks like Detroit did not allow them to do those things in Game One. With all of the video tape that I am sure that the Pens watched since they beat Philly --- you can't really expect me to believe that they had no idea how Detroit would play them???? Detroit did something in Game One that they did not do to Dallas???? To Colorado??? To Nashville???? look the Pens are a very talented team -
TRY NOT GIVING THE PUCK TO THE BEST PUCK POSSESSION TEAM IN THE NHL!!! Try working the puck instead of dumping and chasing - and by all means follow Melrose's advice and try to knock the snot out of Lidstrom and Rafalski and company - make them pay for having the puck. They will make the play, sidestep your check and have odd-man rushes up the ice at will.
3) I visited the other Board for a moment - just to check out what some of the idiots there had to say about the game. Let me correct some mis-guided thinking from the Sidiots. If you look at my previous post - you know I am in favor of the kid from all aspects - he is the future of the league in my opinion. HOWEVER - Sid and malkin did not really have a bad game - they were hounded and hit and had dogs nipping at their heels the entire game. Hmmm - take two of the best DEFENSIVE FORWARDS in the league - yeah two/thirds of the nominees for the Selke Award - who happen to play on the same line to boot - and assign them the task of stopping the Premier line of the other team.
What did you think was going to happen?????
Datsyuk and Zetterberg are unlike anything that the two young stars have had to face so far in the playoffs. They are almost on par in talent - they play better defense and - when they are not hounding you - they have such a knack for holding the puck that you spend the entire shift (all 45 seconds) chasing them. That means of your 20 minutes of ice time in the game - you lost about 10 minutes chasing them.
4) Why are we so surprised that scoring came from somewhere else on the Wings???
It has all season - and then you give 20 minutes of Franzen's ice time to other players - and they have more of a chance to make it happen as well. Do you really think that only one line of Detroit can hurt you???? Every line can skate on this team - and every line is capable of scoring 2-3 goals on any given night. That is the way it has been for all three of Detroit's Cups in the last 11 years.
5) I am expecting another Detroit victory tonight - but the tables will turn in Pittsburgh - for at least a game. I think the most helpful thing will be the fact that the Pens have the last change at home. There will be 6-8 opportunities for them to get a better match-up on the ice in their favor. Not to mention the home crowd for the first Stanley Cup Finals game in Pittsburgh in 16 or 17 years???
6) Has anyone heard one word from Hasek... at all????? I mean the guy has either disappeared or not one reporter has even bothered to get an interview with him.
Wow - I would at least have thought that someone from Pittsburgh would see if they could stir the pot with an interview.
Cheers to all - I hope all of my fellow American friends take just a minute today to try to understand what this holiday is about. I spent Sat/Sun in Washington DC on business. I had a chance to spend some time with members of a group called TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors) at the hotel I was staying at. They are a support group for all branches of the military - to help families/spouses/parents/etc that have lost a loved on in service to their country. Brings the meaning of the holiday a lot closer!!!

I also got a chance to see a pretty inspiring site - the Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Rally was there as well. This is a rally held every year in DC to bring attention to Prisoners of War (POWs) and those Missing in Action (MIAs). Some 400,000 vets and over 45,000 bikes were everywhere in our Nation's Capital. Unfortunately I was leaving to early to attend the ceremony at the wall - but it really was something to see.
