Carlsbad, CA (October 26, 2009) – Year in and year out, Upper Deck strives to deliver the most unique rookie, memorabilia and autograph cards in the industry. In 2010 Upper Deck will debut a brand new hockey product, aptly named BLUE.
Why BLUE, collectors may wonder. To date, our researchers have been scouring pawn shops all across California, spending countless hours searching for the Ultimate relic. As of this month, we are proud to announce that we now possess the only Smurf carcass to have ever been unearthed. Once thought to be a mythical creature of unknown origins, our minimum wage employees have confirmed through DNA tests and historical visual evidence that Smurfs did indeed roam our planet, though be it for a short time. To commemorate such an extraordinary find, we have designed a set built strictly around Smurfs.

The 100-card base set will be limited to just 75 total copies featuring every Smurf, from Dumpy to Sock-licker. The “Blue Relic” cards will feature 20 cards that each contain a real piece of a Smurf body part! Look for such cards as the Blue Chin Relic, Blue Armpit Relic and many more. Blue’s debut of the “Senses” cards will feature a massive 1.5” x 1.5” flesh swatch allowing collectors to scratch and sniff, pick and flick, and peel and taste. These three cards will have a print run of just 24 total copies.
The “What if hockey players were Smurfs” and “What if Smurfs were hockey players” base cards will ensure a standing ovation from fans as they procure these amazing collectibles for their personal collections. What would your favorite Defenseman look like as a Smurf? Or what would a Smurf look like dressed in Goalie Equipment. Wonder no more!
At present, we are working on our first ever Manufactured Smurf/Diorama subset. These ultra rare redemptions will provide collectors with their very own 3 dimensional Smurf model. Imagine pulling the “2 Smurfs sawing logs with a dandelion stalk while another sleeps quietly on a maple leaf” Redemption card. Not only will it be encased in a 4’ x 4’ plastic case, it will be autographed!! (Please note at this time that player is committed to signing).
One of the most anticipated inserts in the set is called “UD Smurfperson” and it boasts on-card signature cards and signature patch cards of Upper Deck’s elite spokesmen like Derek Jeter, Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky with their favorite Smurf. There will be single, double and triple versions of these cards available.
