Here's the story LINK: tsn.ca.....

The Edmonton Oilers have locked-up defenceman Tom Gilbert to a multi-year deal, TSN has learned.

It is a 6-year deal at approximately $4-million per season.

By signing the deal, Gilbert avoids restricted free agency. He could have been a target for a RFA offer.

Interestin', with this signing and having Souray already signed longterm.. Now the Oil have to decide on what to do with Pitkanen?

Anyways, a fair bit of coin tied up in the d-line if you add in Staios.

Going signing, a little high $ wise but that is the tax the oilers seem to have to pay. This spells the end for Pitkanen as far as I can tell.

I see it as a win-win - if Pitkanen gets an offer sheet, the Oilers let him go and take what will likely be at least 2 first rounders - if no one makes an offer - chances are Pitkanen signs for a year and a couple of million. With Gilbert, they're buying up his arbitration years as well as the first two years of UFA status. Small price to pay for someone who made great strides on the blue line this year. With Gresbeshkov making similar progress, and Chorney on the way- to go along with Greene, Smid, Souray and Staios - the D will be an area of strength, much better when compared to the mess it was at the start of the year
