OPC Platinum Reviews??

I understand what you are saying, but if they paid for them last year should they not have been inserted into last years product as a redemption? So were all of these cards (good or bad) never even possible to hit in the product? Was that something they advertised?

If they are falling nearly 50% of the time what does that mean in terms of the entire print run of the product. How watered down must it be to accommodate 50% of last years autographs as well as all of the ones from this year? How many of this year's autographs will not be inserted into packs and no one will know?

To me I think that update autos should only be inserted into products once they have passed their redemption period.

This to me is the issue... But how were people disillusioned? It was spelled out on the checklist...

No Lafreniere rainbow autos on the checklist. Stutzle rainbow auto is at 1:46,000. What did people think was going in? Heck, Lafreniere isn't even in the Retro checklist... Guess we'll get those autos next year, right...

I opened a master case in 16-17 and every 'update' auto was a bonus 'hit' - including a Jagr and a Bobby Hull. I opened almost a case last year on epack and every 'update' auto was the 'hit', including... yeah nobody. Shifting the updates to box (and case) 'hits' is kind of 'dirty' pool, right. They sandbag the checklist and you can see they just shift by a year on some of these guys. You get 19-20 McDavid Best in the World auto parallels in 20-21 and will get 20-21 McDavid autos in 21-22... Business side, totally get. Customer perception/marketing side, I hope UD gets it.

Talk about watered down, though... I had hoped it wasn't going to be this bad, but... It appears the major dilution is real and collectors should have realized this. You get 2 numbered hits per box, 'on average'. They added Cosmic /65, Yellow Traxx /249, and Aquamarine /499, though... Just some quick math... at 2 per box, that's 81,300 more boxes than last year... ~5000 more master cases. If my math is close, 20-21 was produced at ~150% of what 19-20 was...

I won't say 'never', but I can't see me busting this at $150/box...

One of the best products ever and boxes are still undervalued. Live Ovi and Crosby Auto RC's plus all 2006 RC's...can not beat it.

Sorry off topic...

Not to remain off topic... but opening 2005-06 SPA was the last straw that pushed me out of the hobby for 15 years.

Upper Deck shouldn't be so short sighted on screwing over their customers.

This was precisely the point of my thread. I wanted HI members to know what I opened, how much was opened, what I paid, and what I got more importantly. I also wanted to provide my opinion. I think I've made my opinion very clear as many of you have in the above replies....STAY AWAY from Platinum at this price point. If the box price comes down to $100 I MIGHT be a buyer again...but that won't happen so I'll be very happy to spend my money elsewhere!

I agree. It was so so bad. Upper Deck got greedy and it backfired on them. I think 06/07 was a make up in a way but certainly did not help anyone that got garbage the year before.

All these people buying 05/06 Sp Authentic unopened boxes now I don't think realize how many redemptions are in them. Mind you they are likely just buying them to hold and never open so I guess it does not matter.

Why change what they are doing if the money keeps coming by the truck load?

People need to start speaking with their wallets.

I keep hearing this statement and always wonder how it translates in Canada with the way distribution works.

It seems to me like stores have to buy the bad product to get the good from the distributers, distributers likely have to buy all of the products as part of their agreement.

So if the collectors do not buy it then the only people really hurt by that are the hobby shops.

I guess overtime if no one bought anything and enough stores closed down UD might feel some impact?

Next is SPA with 2 autographed cards - ONE updated card AND a SPA FW AU RC that is WHERE is this guy playing, now?
Simply a watered down UD product that will find it's way in an online mix break as a dis carded issue.
Sounds more like garbage IN, garbage OUT!

If a store had to buy crap products to get good products, then that is an agreement between the stores and the distributors. Same thing goes for the distributors and Upper Deck.
Make better deals maybe? There are other sports and non sports out there that people collect. Why order stuff that no one is willing to buy.

The only way Upper Deck will listen is when they don't bring in the money they want. They will be forced to change it or continue to lose money.

And people will buy it, knowing that they will most likely end up with trash, and do it all over with next years release.

Out of curiosity, and this is to everyone whos opening OPCP, how many of you really care about the auto? It seems to me like the fanfare is for the parallels.

I really think Allure and OPCP are fun breaks but they're BRUTAL for any kind of value. They'd be a BLAST if it was just more parallels, remove the auto and bring the pricing down per box. If OPCP was $75 a box and had 5-10 more parallels a box I think I'd be opening quite a bit but just can't justify $120 a box for shiny stuff.

I got into a couple of breaks and did ok, nothing that would make me want to open a box.

You think the value was bad, just wait until it hits e-pack.

I have opened 7 boxes from two different cases the past week or so.i didn't do too bad, actually i'd say i did well considering i only hit one Update auto and it happened to be an Orange Checker's parallel to /15,a couple of parallel Jake Evans auto's,Romanov auto and an Emerald Surge base of Kotkienemi.
this product hasn't been the same since 15-16,but what product has UD actually ever improved on as it aged other than the flagship Series 1 & 2?
At $100 US per box and a hard signed auto per box in this day and age it's as good as it's gonna get,,,,unfortunately.

Actually its a trickle down economy for the Shop owners.Distributors give the decree on how much OPC and Synergy the shop's have to buy in order to get dibs on The Cup.obviously this decree comes from above the distributor, hence UD .just today my shop owner was getting ready for next weeks Black Friday sale and was finding cases of '19-20 MVP,OPC and Synergy that he "had" to order to get his allocation of The Cup last year and he commented that he didn't buy enough to get what he actually wanted which sucked because one of the top rookies last year,Jack Hughes, was a local team player and his allocation of The Cup lasted exactly one day in the shop.

one would argue that it is not a 'problem' for Upper Deck if hobby shops can't shoulder the burden.if there were no middle men,distributors/shops,how well would Upper Deck do if the only choice for NHL cards is Epack or direct orders through themselves or an outlet like Amazon at current retail prices collectors are paying for wax? makes me wonder why you would make your top chain(distributors/shops) have to jump through so many hoops all of a sudden for something just 5 years ago was basically an open enterprise.

Unless you hit one of the very few autos that are worth anything, or a parallel that's low numbered of an elite player (ie. McDavid and that's about it), you'll be lucky if you get $5 worth of cards out of a $150 box.

At an average of $150 per auto (if not more) you won't be seeing me cracking SPA again this year!

This was precisely the goal of my thread, telling hobbyists to stay away from Platinum. The deals Upper Deck has with distributors, and distributors with brick and mortar shops, are entirely different discussions.

I'm glad trekrun hopped on board with the analysis of upcoming SPA! We've both opened enough of this stuff in the past to know that IT also is not a valuable break.

We are just trying to help. I'm actually promoting Allure (at $170-$180/box) I think it's a fun rip. There have been VERY few products I can this about!

It's a truly frustrating situation because Platinum looks great this year, I love the look of the Cosmic & Arctic parallels and the Photo Driven & World's Best inserts. But I'm just going to wait for the "race to the bottom" after it releases on Epack to pick up the cards I want. I'm sure for the price of a box I'll be able to snag almost all of my wants.

I opened 3 boxes....

Reid Duke auto
Keegan Kolesar auto
Reid Duke auto again 😠 😡 😤

That's just plain silly and shows how much UD is mailing it in these days. No competition and a collecting base that will buy anything = junk output.

You’ll get more out of every OPCP box than $5 and I’ve bought 6 boxes and all were $120 a piece. At the price gorgeous parallels, ON CARD auto is still a rare thing especially with COVID, and lots of packs/little base in the packs, OPCP might one of the best products UD makes in the card market today. Yes the 19/20 Update auto SUCK, I’ve had 3 of them in my boxes and it sucks but it’s much better than spending $150 for Allure which is worth less than OPCP in the market, sticker autos and 8 packs.
