Opinions On Sniping

Not really a rant here since a lot of people here take part in sniping and if I had the funds to buy programs to pay for it, I would mostly do it as well, but what are your opinions on it? I admit that when I am about to win a card and someone snipes it with less than 10 seconds left it is quite frustrating, but I guess that's how the ball rolls sometimes.
 
i have used jbidwatcher for the last 4 years or so, 0 cost, but i have made a donation. the only thing is your computer needs to be on in order to snipe. no biggy, mine is on all the time

honestly, i love not having to wait up for those late ending auctions. i set my max and off to sleep i go. if i win..great, if not, on to the next one

For sure! I had to have a late dinner today waiting for a card to end tonight. I'll give that program a look tomorrow. Thanks!
 
I have sniped many times and there's nothing unethical about it in my opinion. The highest bid still wins so even if you use sniping software there's no guarantee you're going to win. Your chances improve but you still have to pay more than the other guy to come out on top.
 
I snipe but I don't use a program. I set the alarm on my cellphone about 3-4 mins before the auction ends and I watch it down to the finish.

I have found at times when I bid early, I get beat out by others who bid, re-bid and then bid one more time to leapfrog over my max.

By waiting until the final moment, I get don't have as much competition.

That said, it makes me really contemplate what that max amount is for me to bid because it's a one shot deal.

I have been sniped many times in the past. That's the way it goes. Nothing wrong with it in my books.
 
Sniping has it's place but sometimes you just need to be in front of the PC to place a bid. With last second activity and other snipes sometimes you might fall short a few cents and your bid doesn't even register but if you were there you could have upped the bid.

I've literally lost out on cards I really wanted over 1 and 3 cents. Had I been in front of my screen I would hid the bid button again and bid the minimum and win the card.
 
I use gixen.com and have for years. Also a free sniping program and it's never failed me. I find nothing wrong with sniping as a practice. My high bid is my highest bid and if I lose I lose.

I have had a couple of failures on gixen, thankfully on smaller items.
 
Never had a failure in using Gixen, I do make the yearly donation which gets your snipe launched from 2 of thier sites. It's the only way I've bid on regular auctions for some time.
 
I use to snipe several years ago when the only place I could place a bid was my home computer. I'd go out on the weekends and party and there would be no way I'd get a chance to bid lol. Now I can just bid on my phone with twenty seconds to go so the sniping is pointless for me.
 
I've been using justsnipe.com for years. It's free if you can deal with only 5 snipes per week, and an 8 seconds left bid time. For 5 bucks a month you get your snipe with 5 seconds left, and the use is unlimited.

Every time I see a thread about shill bidding.... I scratch my head and wonder why people who think they're being bid up unfairly don't just snipe and end the problem.

Only other thing I can say.... In response to the original post, is to ask another question: why does it matter (why is it more frustrating) when you lose an auction with 10 seconds left instead of 10 hours? I've lost plenty of auctions over the years.... My budget isn't all that big.... And it is frustrating to lose when you really wanted the card, but if I'm willing to spend 20 bucks, and someone else is willing to spend more than 20, I'm not winning... Doesn't matter when they place their bid. I know those snipes make it look like you lost by a buck, but their max could have been double yours.

I've been using jbidwatcher for about the same time. I also don't use the program if I don't have to - if I'm online, I just do it myself.

It may not make a lot of sense, but I don't snipe if I think I'm going to get shilled. I put in a small bid early and wait. If I get bid up by a 100% bid activity guy, I walk away.
 
I always used to maunally set my bid in the last couple of seconds, but after some issues - such as bad connection at the time, or even having to re-log into eBay for some reason, and my bids didn't go though, I switched to sniping. I use the "MyIbidder" App for my Iphone, it was $4.99 to purchase, and no other fees, works perfectly.
 
The only complaint I have with sniping is the same complaint I have with bidding in general. I think a snipe - or for that matter, any winning bid - should not only be higher than the previous bid, it should also meet the minimum bid increment requirement. If you've bid $20 and the auction is currently sitting at $12, a snipe of $20.01 should not win it - a bid of $20.50 minimum should win. At least, that's how I see it.
 
After being outbid on a few cards in the final seconds that I have wanted in the past,I find myself hiding in the bushes,sweating just a little.Waiting to pull the trigger. Eat or be eaten. Welcome to the jungle.lol
