Outrageous charge for insurance

So I was looking through eBay for some new Shore's to add and came across this beaut

Now, lets ignore the fact that is not a $300 card, but something I would certainly make a decent offer on. But look at the fine print

Any sale over $50, or combined $50 is automatically charged insurance...ok no problem. But the charge is $25! So if you win a card for $50...he charges $25 to ship it...is it protected by an armed guard? That seems a bit extravagent...I will still make an offer, but it will just be $25 less than I would have offered

I dont mean disrespect by this post, and dont want to upset the seller if he/she is a member here

your thoughts???

If you actually want accurate info:
To send anything insured to the USA with a value over $50 US via Canada Post, your only option is Expedited Parcel. Base rate for that is around $25 with $100 insurance, and $1 per $100 incremental.

However, since it's clear you've made up your mind that the seller is clearly out to gouge and there's no possible basis in reality for his charges and you are fully within your rights to mount this indignant crusade against such a grifter...ignore the above. Carry on.
 
the shipping charges would be the same going the other way from US to Canada as well. while Registered Shipping is closer to $15, Priority International would be around the $20-25 mark.

Well excuse my ignorance. In my years of collecting, I've never seen a charge this high. And since I dont usually go to Canada to ship to the states, I have no clue of the shipping costs.

So again, sorry for the ignorance, and thanks for taking the time to respond

The cost isnt going to affect me making an offer, but since I only have so much money, I HAVE to offer lower, as I need to be able to cover the cost of shipping
In this day n age, sellers have been doing anything to gain a few extra bucks.

I have found that its usually 14-15 bucks to ship registered mail (w/ insurance and tracking) to Canada, and that doesnt include the card holder, the mailer, or the time (break down your pay per hour, and there is usually an opportunity cost of $1 or more to spend a few mins at the post office)
 
I have had to ship express to Canada with $100 insurance on a couple of occasions and each time it was $27.

I wasn't really drawing conclusions, just flabbergasted. I havnt encountered charges like this before, and given the schemes that have been going on, no clue what it was. I suppose I need to start getting used to it. Anyways, I appreciate everyone's input
 
ExpressPost or registered and insured shipping is now a minimum of $17. I'm with the seller...I'm not eating any more money to ship a card to someone.

I can understand that 100%. My ignorance had no clue it was THAT much. I mean, if he said $100, and I wanted the card that bad, Ide have to fork up $100

I guess my tone in the OP was a little misrepresented

you most likely sent that registered which would cost around $16, express mail to canada will cost like $27 from the us

the $25 can be outragous, but that just depends on the service used and i don't see anything wrong with it here(i saw it earlier today for a different card he is selling)
 
I really dont see a problem. $25 is excessive but calling it a rip-off is out of the question.

Its Shipping and Handling. Bubble mailer,gasoline,the sellers time. It all costs money

My response was aimed at the postal company...they're absolutely gouging us to ship things to the US and abroad and provide the most horse crap service in doing so.

This leads to folks thinking that I'm avoiding fees or making up for something with my shipping charges. I was charging $10 for a $17 service, but I'm getting my *** handed to me by doing so. Now, I charge $15 and eat $2 but will still get hit on shipping charges.

Registered Mail to Canada is around $13.50 - but you can't buy extra insurance for it - and the maximum it comes with is like $36 and change - you can't insure it for the value of the Gretzky??????
 
Blame eBay, paypal, and all the scammers out there. You can only eat so many chargebacks before you get forced to go this shipping route. This is one of the reasons I stopped selling on eBay. You get hammered with fees and your ending prices drop because you have charge more for shipping to protect yourself. It's amazing how fewer auctions for hockey cards now.
 
I'm the seller of the card and I just want to say that it cost $27 to ship express post which gets it to the buyer in 2-3 days and I can pull full insurance of the card on it.
Also I'm only charging $25 which is already $2 cheaper than shipping minus the cost of the of package and holder, etc. This also does not take into account what paypal takes off the amount you pay for shipping so that is more that the seller loses for shipping a card.

I am not going to risk losing a card and in worst case a charge back because the buyer feels the shipping is too much.

actually, it is $46.04 exactly; i am looking at a receipt right now.

why should US sellers be honest with the value of an item regarding customs forms when it is only insurable for up to $46.04? i figure that from now on, my registered packages are only going to be "worth" a tops of $46.04 as far as customs are concerned... because that is the "value" i will get back if i have to make an insurance claim.
