Ovechkin card prices

So another playoff year early exit for Ovy and the Caps. How is this going to affect his card prices? Seems like Caps and Ovy fans had enough and seem frustrated and ready to give up on him. It might be different in DC, this is based on tv and media coverage and of course that can be biased and opinionated.

My guess is that he's far enough into his career that I don't think they'll take a big hit. Plus, he's about to enter the top 25 all-time in goals, and he'll start passing some pretty big names. Winning the Cup would have given those cards a huge boost, but I don't think losing will hurt him long-term, so if there's a big drop in price the next few weeks, I'd look to buy.

Good point. However this year he had a below average year by his standards but with the expectations that this year would be his year to finally win his cards seemed to take a jump. Getting put out in the second round again this year and by Sids Penguins seemed to hit the Caps and Zovy fans even harder than ever. Seems like ever hockey show or article seems to think this was it for the current Caps squad. It will be interesting to watch his card values over the summer.

Out of curiosity, I took a look at all the Conn Smythe Trophy winners going back to 1990. Only three (Claude Lemieux, Justin Williams, and Patrick Kane) were wingers. All of those three were RW. IMO, this obviously won't improve the value of his cards, but realistically, he can't be 100% blamed for this. In the playoffs, it seems that D, G, and C are the ones that have the most influence over the course. For the Caps, their D wasn't great, Backstrom didn't have a good series against the Pens, and Holtby for the most part was average. LWs just don't get as much opportunity to truly influence the games as much especially in tight checking playoff games.

From my point of view i will use that (upcoming?!) pricedrop to pick up some older beauties if i can! At the moment i cannot see any reaction on his card prices. All in all card prices (especially from UD Ultimate brand) went down because of an increasing number of parallels and subsets! Not too bad for a collector who can wait to pick up these beauties few months after release...

Ovi is a great player and has still 2-3 years to win the cup! If he does not get it done until this period of time, prices could drop...only best TEAM will win the cup, not best single player. With a few changes in roster caps are ready for winning the cup within next 3 Years. Hopefully with ovy, but maybe not as a captain!

If you read into that a little bit more it's really not that surprising. How do most go about building a championship team? Down the middle.

Roy, Bourque/Blake, Sakic
Richter, Leetch, Messier
Fleury, Letang, Crosby/Malkin
Crawford, Keith, Toews
Quick, Doughty, Kopitar
Vernon/Osgood/Hasek, Lidstrom/Chelios, Yzerman/Fedorov/Zetterberg (Wings were just embarrassingly overloaded at all positions)

As far as Ovie cards, they will stagnate a bit I imagine but not drop. As mentioned, he has already solidified his place in the game and all he can do is probably go up in value with winning at some level. He has all the individual accolades so that's all there really is left for him to accomplish, team glory.

I actually browsed through ebay a bit this past week to see if his Young Guns RC was available for less. Doesn't look like many people are interested in dumping his cards. I think he already has his reputation as someone who can't win the big one so this year's exit is just more of the same. Media, especially sports media, tends to over-dramatize things and then they go onto the next "big story".

Ovy prices on high-end have bottomed out for a long while now. He is a great talent with all the individual accomplishments and hardware. If he can lead his team to win a Cup or be part of a new team to win a Cup in his twilight years, I think it'll be a positive effect on his card pricing. Team disappointment and being clutch in meaningful games is not something anyone expects of him (sad even as a big fan of his). Card prices has baked this in.
