Hi,

I am consulting numbers on Hockey Buzz - Cap Central and realized that almost half the NHL teams are over the cap right now. How is that possible??

(Here is the link: http://www.hockeybuzz.com/cap-central/)

For example, the Vancouver Canucks have a Cap Payroll of $62,691,666, wich is 5,891,666 over the Cap.

Could this be that on the 5,9 millions $, much have been given to injured player (so, have been paid by insurance companies)?

Or, do those team have to make choices to be sure, that at every games, their combined rosted salary doesn't exceed the cap?

I want to understand!

Between guys on the Long Term Injury List, and guys that will become UFAs at the end of the season - you can be over the cap theoretically. The other thing is the tagging room, which is the amount that is assigned for next season - as long as a team is under that amount, they can go "over." That is in part why you've seen the Blackhawks with the long-term deals for Kane, Toews and Keith - they couldn't be announced until they had enough tagging room for next season cleared to get them on-board.

Well its not about if the insurance company pays for the salary...

Its just that if a player is on Long Term Injury Reserve like Pavol Demitra Then a team gets "CAP" releif for the salary during the time they are on LTIR.

Also if a player has a bonus claus then a team is allowed to go over the cap by that amount. If they are over the cap at the end of the season and the player earns the bonus then it will be put towoards their next years cap.

Guys that are on UFA at the end fo the season do not give you any cap relief for this season.

The only way you don't get the full impact of their salary is if they are on LTIR or if its a player that you trade for during the season.. then you only count the percentage of their Cap hit for the percentage of the season that they are with your team.

Long term injured players dont count against the cap, but still show up on the payroll. Makes sense, as they can afford (cap wise) to pay for a capable replacement.

Odd, I don't even see Lucic on the list for the Bruins. They are over too, so I suspect putting Savard and Lucic on IR for their injuries saves them money against the cap.
