Overlooked But Not Forgotten

Since the new millennium, more specifically the 99/00 NHL season, approximately 2,503 players have made their NHL debuts. Card companies have been diligent in getting at least one NHL rookie card for each guy...well almost. A handful have been overlooked. I've been keeping notes over the years and thought some here might be interested in the topic.

Personally, I think it would be great if the post 05/06 guys got some love in a future set. A throw in in a big checklist. Or even one of their own 'rookie update' cards featuring all 3 on one card with a little explanation of who they are and why they are getting a card now.

2005/2006 - Present

Gregory Stewart
Played 28 NHL games with the Montreal Canadiens between 2008 and 2010.

Lee Sweatt
3 NHL games with the 2010/11 Vancouver Canucks.

John Ramage
1 NHL game with 2014/15 Calgary Flames and 1 NHL game with 2015/16 Columbus Blue Jackets.
Was going through my own collection and realised that there is at least this guy missing?

Adam Berti played 2 games for the Blackhawks in 2007-08. At least according to Beckett he does not have any NHL cards. Is that correct?

I just double checked all my notes and had an asterix next Berti's name, telling myself to do more research but evidently that didn't happen. You appear to be correct as I cannot find any trace of an official Berti Rc. His ITG H&P card is the closest he came it seems.

So that makes 4 guys since 2005/06....

OK.

Love your websites BTW! I find this type of collecting the most interesting :-)

Marsters was a freak accident. A car hits a deer, it gets to its feet and marsters hits it again. The deer went through the windshield and he was pronounced at the scene. On a side note Youngs widow married his best friend. Kind of F'd up if you ask me.

I didn't even realize BJ Young passed away! I have his RC in my Wings collection, I remember when he played those couple games for Detroit like 15 years ago. So sad.

Very cool! Thanks for sharing. I remember a lot of these guys from 5-7 years ago had great predicted futures. It's too bad many of them didn't reach that.

There's another list that carries some relevance here. During these years, 99/00-03/04, a number of players were left with official cards, but no 'NHL' cards. All these guys have UD/Topps/ITG/Bowman cards of some sort, but depict them with their junior or international team. These come from the times before rules dictated that a player had to suit up in a game to get a card. So these gentlemen get 'honorable mentions' here. Note: This list only applied to pre 2004 debuts. From 2005/06 onwards, everyone except the 3 listed above have been depicted on an NHL card.

B.J. Young

Looks like Greg Leeb (debut with Dallas 2000-01) who only has a card in the 1997 Bowman set should be included here?

I collect graded rookie enforcers. You guys mentioned Glen Cochrane, Serge Roberge, Gary Rissling getting rookies with the Fleer Throwbacks 2002-03 set. Some enforcers who never got rookie cards.

Jim Pavese 328 Games
Joe Paterson 291 Games
Dan Frawley 273 Games (Upper Deck released First Nations cards of Native players who never had any in 2023)
John Blum 250 Games
Paul Mulvey 225 Games
Steve Dykstra 217 Games
Jerry Dupont 214 Games
Bob Hoffmeyer 198 Games
Daryl Stanley 189 Games
Jeff Brubaker 178 Games
Larry DePalma 148 Games
Richard Zemlak 132 Games
Dale Henry 132 Games
Kent Carlson 113 Games
Dan Mandich 111 Games

First time reading the first post they should make a "lost yg" set featuring nhl players that never got one or something from 2000 on
