Panini Classic Signatures???

Is it just me or can anyone else not see how this product justifies a higher per pack cost of more than $10.00? I liken this product to other signature heavy products and can't see how it is not $60.00 per box or $10.00 per pack.
 
Ok, I'm going to play devils advocate here.

The one thing I think that everyone is missing when complaining about the price point of this product is the production costs. You are getting a hard signed autograph per pack. Players charge for their auto's, shipping the cards to be hard signed and back to Panini all costs money.

I could see the argument if the product was a sticker auto product, as the production costs would be less. If you compare it to other products that have the same price point I would personally open this over SPGU or even Crown. I would much rather have a hard signed auto of a nobody than a $2 jersey card for $30/pack.

One question is... If Gretzky and Orr were in this product would you be ok with the $180 price point?
 
I understand the extra money it costs for the on card autographs, but it's still not worth the price point. I will pick the $5 autographs off on ebay for just that.
 
It's not being widely broken for that reason. I think Panini overpriced themselves on this set. The cards are BEAUTIFUL and the autograph checklist is pretty thorough (minus the UD guys) but the price is just way too high. There are no GU in the set (unless I missed something) so it's only autos...and even though the checklist is big, it's full of WHO? status names too (um, Bruce Shoebottom?).

It'll settle in time, but dealers and distributors are going to lose before that happens.
 
I agree the set is nice and never meant this to be a nice set bad set debate. I just believe that at $10.00 or even $15.00 this would be a great product. I like the idea that they have a bunch of nobody's in the mix that do not have very many autos. It makes the set that much more interesting.
 
I think $20 a pack would have been perfect for me.

A six pack box for $120 with a guaranteed six autos...not bad.

I hear where Mikey is coming from. I like the diverse checklist and there are some good names included.

Of course if your auto is Bruce Shoebottom and you're not a Bruins fan....yikes.

But if you aren't willing to take the risk then you shouldn't be buying the box (or the pack).
 
I'm a fan of Panini but this product is brutal as far as value is concerned. I opened 2 boxes and got no more than $40 worth of cards. I agree that this should be in the $10-$15 per pack range but it's likely production costs were quite high. It's too bad because the set itself looks awesome. The autos are really clean and crisp and the classic style of the base set is quite appealing
 
nicely done product,it just doesn't justify the price point though.i liken this set to ITG Decades or Captains C,same caliber players hard signed.but with ITG releases you kick in a more cash for higher rewards in the form of more auto's and game used.it should be a $15-$20 per pack product,with a guaranteed serial numbered auto per box at the $20 price.which btw,isn't happening at it's current price.:eek:
 
What product though is priced where we think it should? SPA is 6-8 dollars for a lot of base and a chance at three autos, SPGU is 30 bucks a pack for usually a 3-5 dollar jersey, Ultimate is 100 dollars for a base, rookie, auto and jersey maybe a patch. The Cup is 100 dollars per card, its the name of the game. Obviously we would like to see this product at 10 dollars a pack but in the hobby, its not even something we should dream about.

Be A Player, with 8 autos per box was around 100$.

Forever Rivals, 3 autos, 3 GU, 3 very limited base cards and 3 limited inserts for 100$

The first BAP products from UD were around the $15-20/pack mark. When Pinnacle took over for a couple years, it dropped to $10ish. ITG's first BAP product leapt back up to the $20/pack mark.

Now I'll concede that all of that occurred in the 90s, but there's a common theme regardless: autograph-laden products are expensive. I don't think Panini's offering is excessively so for what it delivers. As always, I advise you to vote with your wallet: If you don't think the value is there, then simply don't buy it. That accomplishes far more than grousing about how it's not at the price you want to pay.
 
I didn't know those older products were ever so expensive. I bought at least one pack of Signature Series (Pinnacle or ITG) each year from 97-98 to 02-03, and paid exactly $10 each time. Could that partially be the exchange rate from back then?

Andy, was it the luxury of buying them at Gibralter? I lived in Vegas back then and packs were roughly as follows


94-95 bap. $25-$30
95-96 bap $15-$20
96-97 $12-$15
97-98 $8-$10
98-99 bap all star or playoff $15-$20
99-00 bap $15-$20
00-01 bap $12-$15
01-02 bap $12-$15

I only had card shops to buy stuff back then as shows were few and far between. It might have varied depending on where you were located.
 
I bought a few at Gibraltar, but I know I also purchased some from a couple Detroit-area card shops, including one known for being stupid expensive. Guess I just got lucky!
