Perhaps I'm naïve......but I like to believe that the memorabilia on cards has been game used or worn by the player depicted on the card.

Upper Deck has generally done a pretty good job on the back of the card stating that this has been used by that player in an NHL game...even if that game might be pre-season.

Panini generally states "game used memorabilia" on the back of their cards. Do you feel that the piece was used or worn by the player on the card? Are the highly sought after Dominion Silver Ensigns shields from that players jersey?

What are your thoughts?

I would trust them way more than Upper Deck. From what I've seen, Panini has a massive collection of game worn jersey's. As for Upper Deck, who knows where half of their jersey's come from.

Correct. Upper Deck has a history of using fake game used items not Panini. So until then I wouldn't be concerned with Panini's legitimacy.

I trust ITG the most, Panini a very close second, and Upper Deck is a distant third.

Panini is generally open about the jerseys they use, even showing them in videos from time to time, and sets like "Prime Authentics" showcase a large number of Meigray tags and official team set tags that come off the game-worn jerseys they use in cards, sometimes with multiple set tags from multiple seasons for the same player. You never know what goes on behind the tightly closed doors at Upper Deck and its very rare you see a Meigray tag or something used in a patch card to give you any peace of mind.

Panini has made the odd slip-up (so has ITG) but as far as I'm concerned they are far and away the two best companies when it comes to authentic game-used memorabilia. It's too bad we're losing one of them to another UD exclusive.

Also, I agree that the COA's on the card backs leave much to be desired but it's mainly legal mumbo-jumbo to cover their own butt in the rare event they screw up.

Agree 100%!!

Upper Deck has become pretty well known for their "Player Worn" items -aka- The player wore the item while posing for pics or while signing items, and not in a game.

If you REALLY want to see some questionable COA wording on the back of cards, check out Topps. They pretty much don't guarantee ANYTHING.

Upper Deck's statement as to the authenticity of the piece still had the signature of Richard McWilliam on it, long after he died. That pretty well sums it up as to how much they care.

My biggest concern about UD is that in the rookie year they always use event-worn pieces, but in their 2nd year and on, all of a sudden all the memorabilia for the same players is said to be game-used.

Though I have no valid proof, I wouldn't be shocked if those event-worn rookie photoshoot jerseys are being used again and sold off as game-used.

This is why I stray away from almost all UD game used

I like how ITG tells you which team the jerseys come from. Even the odd time which game they've been used in.

I would trust Panini's word...when they first started, I sold them a bunch of GU stuff that I had and I know that they were buying at the Spring Expo back in 2011.

I've been to UD's game used room, which is a museum unto itself. I got to see some incredible full memorabilia but again, it's been pointed out that they have bought from dealers who were busted selling fake GU equipment, so who knows.

ITG has certificates and lines of provenance for their memorabilia and the Good Dr. has been kind enough to show them to me in my visits to his office. I'd trust them to the end of the world.

With all of that being said, the GU section of the hobby isn't at all what it used to be because of shortcuts so it almost doesn't even matter any more whether it's game used or not. People pay for colours and colour breaks and that's the end of it. Sad but true.

Thanks for all the great feedback everyone!

I guess that I can be confident that the Dominion Silver Ensigns auto card that I recently purchased has a shield from that players jersey
