REPORT: AVALANCHE ADD TO OFFER FOR ROY TO COACH TEAM

Patrick Roy could be head coach and general manager of the Colorado Avalanche if he accepts the posts from his former club.

According to Ruefrontenac.com - a Montreal-based news website - Avs president Pierre Lacroix has offered Roy both jobs and that Roy wants to hire former teammate Sylvain Lefebvre and Drummoundville head coach Guy Boucher as his assistants.

The GM posting became vacant after Lacroix fired Francois Giguere last month and Tony Granato is still the team's head coach.

The Montreal report added that Craig Billington - the Avs' vice president of hockey operations and Roy's former backup, could serve as a co-general manager.

The Denver Post reported last week that the Avalanche offered Roy the coaching job, and added there was a possibility he might get the vacant general manager's job as well.

Ruefrontenac.com also reports that Lacroix is offering Roy almost full control over the club's hockey operations as a way of trumping any potential offer from his other former team - the Montreal Canadiens.

Since retiring in 2003, Roy has been part owner and head coach of the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, winning a Memorial Cup title in 2006.

I haven't been paying much attention to any of this talk of Roy coaching in the NHL (I don't think he is quite yet ready for that but I could be wrong). And I am a big fan of Roy, but under no circumstances do I want him coaching my team.

All bias aside, this is not going to improve this franchise one bit. If I was a Colorado fan, I would be very vocal about not wanting this to happen. Wonder how Granato feels since he has not yet been fired and his team is actively pursuing a new coach?

As a Colorado Fan, I'm deeply worried now. No one's sure he can actually coach at this level, and now they want to attach the GM tag to him too? Ugh.

I agree we need a new coach, but not Roy.

The way things are going, the Avs will be this season's Tampa Bay Lightning. Man, what are they thinking? Even if this guy had shown great things as a coach and GM in Junior (which he hasn't), I'd still NEVER offer both jobs to someone who has yet to even sniff the NHL at either position

If he does it would surely be entertaining. How many gaskets has he blown in the Q

The Avs/Wings hate was solely a product of the fact that both teams were strong and dominant at the same time in the same conference. Yes, the Draper incident proved a focal point, but that's all it was.

Rivalries occur when two groups want the same thing and are evenly matched to get it. Right now, an Avs/Wings rivalry is about as likely as a Florida/Pittsburgh rivalry. There's simply no point. Jealousy maybe. But not rivalry.

I think it would be smarter if they could coax him outta retirement and stick him between the pipes next year instead of Raycroft or Budaj.....
