Fletcher said he was keeping him??? Guess he has nothing to lose since he's gone in 3 months.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have fired coach Paul Maurice, sources tell TSN.

Maurice had one year remaining on his original three-year contract.

Maurice was hired by former Leafs GM John Ferguson Jr. Back on April 7th, interim GM Cliff Fletcher was non-committal about Maurice's future with the club.

"There will be discussions, but you can be sure of one thing," Fletcher told the Canadian Press. "The person coming in is going to be a strong hockey person and he's going to have very definite opinions of his own."

Maurice, 41, originally joined the Maple Leafs orginization June 24, 2005 as head coach of Toronto's AHL affiliate the Toronto Marlies. He was promoted to the Maple Leafs on May 12, 2006 following Pat Quinn's dismissal.

Assistant coach Randy Ladouceur has also been let go.

In two season with Toronto, Maurice compiled a 164-76-65-22 record, missing the playoffs both years. The Leafs have now missed the playoffs for the third year in a row, something that hasn't happened since 1928.

Fletcher never said he was keeping him.

He did however say the decision was up to the new GM... I guess something changed.

It's clear the team wants to rebuild completely from the top on down.
 
Maybe what changed is that Fletcher is the new GM and we just don't know it yet?

Maybe for a bit, he said on more than one occasion though he didn't want to be the new GM permanently. He's hinted that they should have a new GM over the summer. In fact, I think he actually said there will be a new GM for sure.

It's funny but the team needs a new president, GM, coach, captain (Mats is a ufa right now) among others.

Hopefully we can speed up the usual 3-5 year rebuild process and do what the Flyers did.

It was a guarantee he was getting fired.

There cleaning up everything top to bottom. And when a coach misses the playoffs for 2 straight years, generally this sort of thing happens (hello Vigneault in Vancouver... and they didn't even miss 2 straight).

It's not as if PM is some stellar coach.... he's made the playoffs something like 4 times in his 11 year coaching career.
 
They NEED to be cleaned out from top to bottom - but I mean from the very top!!

I have a simple solution for their next coach.... wait about 10 days - I am fairly certain that the Sharks will fire Ron Wilson - even though there is not a better option out there at the moment. Wilson would be an excellent coach for them.

Or if they really want to stir the pot - they can throw a boatload of cash at Babcock, at least he would instill the discipline that the Leafs sorely need.

Babcock is NOT leaving Detroit - why would he do that? He's got a great situation in Detroit - who needs the mess that Toronto is (and will be for some time to come)?

I don't know who would WANT to be the coach in Toronto right now - PM is probably relieved that he doesn't have to be the sitting duck coach until this time next year...
 
I don't know if Maurice could be called a scapegoat - if they wanted to pin the teams failings on him, they would have punted him at the end of the season. I think there is likely talks heating up with GM candidates who have made it clear Maurice is not the man they want, and Fletcher did him a favour by letting him go early enough to be considered for other jobs in the AHL or NHL.

I will say it was refreshing to have the Toronto media almost completely blindsided by this to the extent the story only broke a mere 90 minutes before it became official... Somehow, the Leafs plugged the leak, at least for one day.

It's the right decision for both sides IMO. It gives Maurice a chance to look for another job in the off-season and allows the new GM, whoever that is, to start with "his guy" behind the bench. Sure, Maurice may have been the fall guy to a certain extent, but it's a good move all around.

I thought this was total games-W-L/OTL, but those 3 numbers don't add up to 164. Did the Leafs win 164 games and only lose 76 under him?

He coached 164 games. The numbers are 76 wins, 66 losses (not 65) and 22 SO/OTL.
 
There will be no new GM this year TO botched the burke deal and it blew up in there face if they go hire someone else they would just look like the idiots they have been for the past 3yrs my bet is Fletcher stays until they can make an honest run at Burke when his contract is up next year with ANA. I think in firing Marice they show that moves are being made but lets face it with the collective idiocy of the TO front office we should't be surprised when we have the same nucleus of players come next year and more of the no brains no balls management that make up the MLSE
 
Hmmm... I don't know how you can say Toronto 'botched' the Burke deal. The media in Toronto is reporting that despite what was said in public, Anaheim refused to let Burke talk to any other teams, and never had any intentions of letting him leave this year. They were never at any point allowed to officially talk to Burke without fear of tampering.

The current rumour of Toronto hiring Nonis as an associate General Manager are interesting, and would lead right into Burke coming here next year... though you'd have to think Anaheim would fire him before he traded all that young talent in Anaheim to the Leafs. :D

Posts like this just go to show the Leafs are damned if they do and damned if they don't. Much like Upper Deck.

How did the Leafs "botch" the deal? They never publicly said they wanted Burke. It was Samueli (the Ducks owner) who made Burke stay on for the remainder of his contract. Apparently, Bettman stepped in too to ensure he fulfilled his contract.

Players/coaches/GM/etc all sign contracts eh... the Leafs had no business grabbing someone else already under contract. Sure they were hoping they could but realistically, if the Ducks didn't want Burke to part (and they didn't) the Leafs couldn't have done a thing.
 
That's why I say they botched it maybe it was the media more then MLSE but prior to ANA being eliminated and burke announcing he was going nowhere Burke coming to TOR (as far as the media was concerned) was a done deal. They had talks they didn't have talks No one knew for sure until Burke said so and besides I 've been a leaf fan for about 25 years and I will remain one but do any of you think that things are going to change that drastically if the past 10 years have taught us anything it's that we shouldn't count on anything were still the only team in the league ran by a board of governors which cares more about the Hockey dollar then the game itself this is a reality and unfortunately the fans opinion in this market matters very little . I hope for better things next year like most of us do but even the last 48 hrs seems too familiar .

Let's fire the coach then Wait for Mats to decide what he would like to do next year before they can start planning for next year

Does it really matter who the GM and Coach are going to be, as long as the strings are still being pulled by the brass upstairs?

And the Toronto media would LOVE it if a guy like Burke landed on the scene - he'd make their job SOOOOOOO easy - quote after quote after quote. Burke is a smart enough guy to stay away form that situation - I pity the poor schmuck who takes that job...

"Welcome Mr. New GM... come this way. This is your new office. Meet your assistant Monique. Now, in this room, we need you to fill out some paperwork while we tattoo a red target to your back... see you in a couple of hours."
