OK, I have had enough. I've sat quietly and listened to this bozo without saying a word. But I can't take it any longer. You sir, are no Danny Gallivan. So stop using the phrases he is famous for. "Coming out rather gingerly on the right side". "Failed to negotiate contact". A "cannonading drive". Perhaps it is meant as a tribute, but frankly it is annoying. Work on improving your play-by-play skills in some other way. Perhaps stop using the "this is (insert player name here)" as a start. At least tonight's game should be your last for this year's playoffs.

I don't mind Romanuk, not great, not bad. At least he knows the names of all of the players. More than you could say about the last 15ish years of Bob Cole.

not sure what you would sound like if youre lucky enough to reach 84 and still broadcast games... even at 70 he was still doing what he loves..

no knock towards you but I hate when people pick on cole, cherry and the other vets of broadcasting... these two are well in their 80s and doing what they love.
blame the networks for giving them contacts year after year don't blame the vets
 
The Minnesota series with Romanuk/Galley was enough for this Jets fan. Those clowns had me dreading the commentary night after night...

"SCHEIF. THE KNIFE!" was one of Romanuk's "iconic" phrases from that one. Yikes.

I believe there is a difference between style and competence. People will seemingly always complain about broadcaster x because of their style. I don't really care about that. It's a matter of taste. But when you provide a substandard product, by not knowing the names of all of the players on the ice, criticism is warranted.

So, because of someones advanced age they should not face the same scrutiny as someone younger? That seems odd. I understand that he is a legend. But that should not inculcate him from criticism.

And I believe that one can lay some criticism at the feet of CBC/Sportsnet, but Bob Cole was happy to take the paycheck to do what he loves, and with that comes criticism at times.

I'm sure that he, like Paul Romanuk all care about the same about we who have issues with their calls, that being not at all.
 
Ever go to a legends game and say, "boy these guys suck. They can't skate or shoot. Why do we watch?" Doubt it, you are enjoying seeing legends at work. That is the way with Cole. You are getting to see a legend at work!!!

I personally don't mind these guys. Been watching Cole for many years. Good for them for doing what they like to do for so long.
 
Cole is a legend and still deserves to be there. Can't say that about some of the other announcers/broadcasters I see on networks like Sportsnet and TSN.

That's a false equivalence, but to each his own.
 
Bob Cole WAS a legend. He is now tarnishing his legacy. The only reason he is still there is because people feel he gets a pass because of his age. If you can’t do the job, then time to give it up. Same with Cherry, mumbling and stumbling over his words and spitting out nonstop incomplete sentences on every episode of Coaches Corner.

I agree that HNIC wouldn’t be the same without them, but lord heavens, it is time they give it up.
 
I could debate the positives and negatives of those mentioned thus far, but if I could oust any hockey broadcaster, it would be Pierre Maguire!

Who would ever watch Coaches Corner without Cherry and MacLean.
 
Well I’m 46 and I admit I love Coaches Corner and Bob Cole. I grew up with them and I still love listening to both. Are they perfect NO! Are they entertaining YES! Maybe I’m nostalgic or whatever but give me Bob Cole over any other current announcer. A lot of the current NHL announcers are horrible. They are boring and I dislike their way of calling a game. If you are in Canada remember the Disaster of replacing Ron Maclean with George Strombo. Huge mistake, HNIC ratings dropped everyone was poed. They got rid of George and brought back Ron and it’s 1000% better and the fans came back. New is not always better, the grass is not always greener. I don’t believe in keeping people just because of their name if that were the case Gretzky and Mario would still be playing. However Cherry and Cole still offer an good and valuable service.

That was because Ron Maclean was still at the top of his game when he was unceremoniously tossed aside. George was too young, too hip, and didn't match the demographic for a large chunk of the HNIC audience.

Cherry and Cole stopped being perfect years ago. Now they have both just devolved into incoherent rambling, like their mouth can't catch up with where their brain is going.

I agree that HNIC wouldn't be the same without them, but the point is, they are no longer capable of performing their job to the level that it needs to be. I respect the passion both have for the game, I especially respect the passion that Cherry has for our men and women in the armed forces, and I respect the legacy that Cole created. You say that you don't agree with keeping people around just because of their name, but that is exactly what they are doing with these two.

We were all able to move on when Danny Gallivan and Dick Irvin left, we can do it when Cherry and Cole finally give it up.
 
Opinions vary, I like Cole and Cherry. No matter how many reason people tell me I am wrong I still like them :) Even if they aren’t at the top of their game they are still better than the rest.

Funny enough Bob Cole was in the shop yesterday and got a haircut. He's got such a huge history here with curling and as well as Reach For The Top...

I respect his career before hockey and more than ever now as he is nearing the end. My opinion is I accept his faults and don't care if he gets mixed up or can't keep up..... It's all about hs tone

I'll continue to listen to his games and if Cole is not what you wanna hear, no one is forced to listen to him...turn the volume off, no biggie
