Pavel Datsyuk confirms he is retiring after the playoffs.

I knew for sure that if they did not make the playoffs he would be retiring. I was hopeful he would play out his contract but I knew this whole time he wanted to go back to Russia after not wanting to leave during the 12-13 lock-out.

I thought Datsyuk was easily the best over-all player in the league for many years now. It will be a sad day for me when he retires.

But... maybe he will play another season when Detroit wins the Cup this year :D

Thought for sure he would go one more next season and finish out his contract.

What now for Detroit?

Big hit on the cap next year and you just don't replace the "Magic Man".

Just read a bit more about him and his situation.

Sounds like he has "Peter Forsberg syndrome" ankles totally destroyed.

Tough to hear, what a player!

Pavel will be traded to a team with a ton of cap space and Stamkos will be wearing red and white.

In an ideal world. But if you read the article, ownership and management are saying that he won't be traded. Its hard to see a realistic scenario where Detroit willingly goes into next season with nearly $8 million in dead cap space. More if you include the Weiss buyout and our overpaid backup goaltender.

Thought the same thing, there will be a team that will trade some picks with Det and use his contract to reach the cap floor.

Future HOF, congrats

He single handedly destroyed the Blackhawks in many games, and even with the dislike for the Wings rivalry, like Yzerman and Lidstrom, you couldn't help but respect the guy and cheer for him. He certainly shut up all the critics of the Russian style of play. They only score, they don't back check or play defense, uh huh, Datsyuk was one of the greatest two way players ever. He reminds me so much of Joe Sakic, quality guy on and off the ice, gave everything he had to his team, just pure character and leadership. I will certainly miss watching him play.

Another legend calling it quits from the NHL. I've pretty much hated the Red Wings my entire life (Had to as an Avs fan) but I've always respected their organization, and the players they've had. Datsyuk is/was one of my favorite players. The complete package guy, which I think is a rare thing to find in the NHL. Best of luck to him & his family

The way I found about the news was comical.
I was picking up a Datty Supreme and the someone close by mentioned that i needed to pay more since it was a retired piece? As soon as the words hit my ears.. I felt sad.. Hard to not root for a guy who was a 7th round pick and a beast on the ice. Nice one Pavel.. Will miss your ability to grind my teams down to saw dust.

Remember when Corey Perry picked a fight with Datsyuk and lost, Dats only fight ever. The cap hit is brutal for next year, the year after it adds up to a stud #1 dman that the wings are missing badly.

That kind of sucks that you have to have that big of a cap hit for a retired player. Does he still get paid his full salary or just a retirement payout?

With Sweet Caroline playing over the speakers, I have very fond memories of that game seeing as I was at it!

With the way NBC and Datsyuk conducted himself at the end of the game its all but certain that he's retiring in the off season. Great career, hopefully #13 will be in the rafters ASAP.

Sucks for the Wings losing one of their best players and still taking the cap hit. He didn't play well in the playoffs and didn't look like he was really into it. Leafs have a lot of available cap space, maybe they can but a few draft picks from Detroit....I mean trade some cap space for Pavel and a couple high picks:dance:
