PC Card Rating System......need your input

Ok so here's the deal. I'm trying to develop a PC Card Rating System. I want to be able to put a card into this system that I feel is PC worthy and then it will help me figure out the level of importance this card is to my PC.

So far I have come up with three types of screening
Availabiltiy
Cost
Importance
These three screens then have a numbering system of 1-5. (5 being the highest)

So for example my personal debat of a crosby yg and a gretzky opc rc

Crosby
Availablitly = 1 (newer release and alot out there to puchase)
Cost = 3 (You can still find some of these for a pretty good price)
Importance = 3 (Still has time to drop in value, still young in career)
Final Grade = 7/15

Gretzky
Avail = 5 (tough to find, given possibility of fakes)
Cost = 5 (high bv and you know you have to pay to get one in good condition)
Importance = 5 (This is the top of the heap RC to have)
Final Grade = 15/15

So based on this, I should pick up a Gretzky before I pick up a Crosby given that it has a higher grade.


Now my questions to you guys, what would add to this system or change from it to make it your own. I'm looking for more idea's to make this a better screening practice.
I'm open to all suggestions.

I agree on your Gretzky ratings, he has already proven himself to be the best player ever whereas Crosby still has a long career ahead of him.
 
Not a bad little system.

Are you making this just for you? Or for the hobbyists? Would be a good idea to have something like that that peopel can add their own rating for cards for people who post about what card is better for an investment and stuff.


To answer your questions though, might wanna add in a brand for the cards. Crosby YG obviously books for more then a crosby victory rookie (which is also more widely available).
Same thing with the gretzky Topps and OPC rookies, OPC books for more.

Sorry I did mention if was a YG and an OPC rc I was comparing. (I should highlight that more)

And anyone can use this, I just have it on an excel spreadsheet right now. It's very easy to do.

I'm taking this time (I'm currently not in a buying position right now) to take a step back and cup with a game plan for what I want to add. So it's totally subjectional as to what you compare or put into this.

The way I see the Importance rating is the one where it is the most customizable in my eye. That's where personal preference comes into play.
 
Great idea. I'd add a couple of things to add significance to cards in your PC.
Investment potential: this might be somewhat reflected in your existing categories, but would be good to be more specific if this is something you had in mind. What I am getting at here involves everything from hot current rookies to vintage. Now of course not all of us collect cards for the purpose of investment, but for some this is an important element to collecting. You might figure out a rating system here as well. Some players like Crosby and Price might be high on the list in terms of likely success and continued hobby love, while others might be darkhorses. What might even be more simple and could be a separate category all its own be to have a folder in your PC that would incorporate your rating system into a "Hot List." This way you could actually rank your PC, and a lot of your data could be gained from current market activity. Anyway, I don't know if this helps, but I thought I'd brainstorm a bit for you and give you some of my ideas.

brainstorm away this is great, these are the kinds of idea's I'm looking for. It was also mentioned on the other boards about visual appeal, that's more product specific though

I do like the investment potential, but to put a twist on it, I would rather see something maintain it's value with inflation.

How about something along the line of "value stability" vs "growth potential".

This is what I mean. In your example the Crosby YG has the potential to increase (in my opinion) little. He's already one of the top five, if not THE top player collected. His stuff is already sky high. That being said, how much higher can it go? BUT....If he drops dead tomorrow, his cards will decrease! No stanley cup, no HOF etc......jsut a woulda,coulda shoulda.

The Gretzky on the other hand, has the records and the hardware to back up his career to the point his value will NEVER decrease. Does his cards have the potential to go up? You bet!!! If he drops dead tomorrow his stuff goes even higher! Think about it. NO MORE game used auto's or any kind of auto's what so ever. Everyone will gobble them up because he can't sign no more.

So gretzky gets a 5 for value stability and a 3 for growth potentail, total 8.
Crosby gets a 3 for value stability and a 3 for growth potential, total 6.
 
Hmm maybe Bruce could incorporate something like this in the next magazine, apply it to all sports or a different sport for each issue...
 
See I disagree about Crosby's potential increase. He was already the hottest player throughout most of last season and then he spiked even further during their Stanley Cup run. I didn't keep tabs on the RCs but I was set building the Black Diamond set last year and what was once a $40 jumped up to $50 during the playoffs due to his and the team's performance. Once he actually gets himself a Cup or strings together another MVP-calibre season, I think he could well bump up again. If he keeps at a consistently high level for, say, 10 years, the growth potential is enormous. But like you said, if he gets hurt or "drops dead," then it's evident that there will be a major drop-off.
 
I didn't say no potential increase. Just very little right now. Like they say, "It don't mean a thing if you ain't got that ring".

biggest factor in collecting is the desire one has for picking up the cards. you can give me the choice between a crosby yg and a high end lundy that may sell for less than the YG and i'd probably choose the lundy.
 
Interesting little project you're working on here. Seems to make sense to me, but most of your factors are pretty objective, whereas I also tend to value cards in my PC based on personal preference which is much more subjective. There are certain players I like more, certain sets/projects I want to work on, certain card designs I like, despite how rare they are, how much they cost, or investment potential. But good luck in trying to develop a system that works for you... with so many options, I'm always struggling with what to keep in my PC!
 
Just an update on the system.

Once I narrow down the importance of say a gretzky auto vs a crosby auto I then go into more detail. Sticker auto's aren't in consideration (personal perference). I will then do a search and follow a bunch of different cards from that player then re-rank those cards based on personal appeal. It's a long process I know but right now all I have is time, and no money, so I can wait.

For example in the case of Sid, I am liking his auto's from SPA products the most. Hard Signed in blue sharpie on sold white backgrounds.
