Photobucket sizing question for showing off collection

Hey everyone, I know this may seem like a silly question but I'm just curious for people's opinion.

What size is a good one to re-size all my card scan's to, so that I can show them off nicely while them still being big enough to see detail. I recently scanned every single Rene Bourque card I own individually so they can be nicely labeled and organized in my photobucket. But because I scanned them all on their own the scanning is HUGE when I was trying to show them off in the show and tell.

So my question is what size should I change all the cards to? Please let me know for both the Portrait size cards and the ones that are landscape sized

I've seen it many time suddenly shrink to look nice and tidy, but for some reason when I did it this time it didn't do that. They stayed very big and went very far off width-wise.

I scan everything in at 100% 300 dpi and then in Photobucket change the size to medium (320 x 240) no matter if it's portrait or landscape

For cards in slabs I may leave them at large (640 wide) so the card itself isn't too small

I'm not even sure how big or what resolution my scans are but they are monsterous. I usually put them at 320 x 240 but will go the next size smaller if I'm displaying a larger set.

Being a computer moron, I do things the hard way...

scan two at a time, save it as a resized small. Then save it at 59% of that size. Then open it in paint, and save each card individually. That is the size I use for mail posts.

I typically scan at 400dpi so there's good detail if needed. Then I just upload to eBay/ PhotoBucket/ eBid as-is...probably a bit slower since 400dpi, but the quality's there

Last night I changed all the scan's to 320x240 and they seemed to have worked out really well

If you look at optimal sizing with regards to dpi of your scans there are a couple of factors to look at.

I scan everything at 300 dpi - that is overkill for screen viewing

I do 300 dpi in the event I want to print something - dpi for printing is usually 150 dpi and you need double the resolution for printing - anything over 300 dpi for photos is a waster

Lineart/vector based scans should be 600 dpi

If you size to 320x 240 then anything over 91 dpi actually won't make much difference

You actually have to resize up to 320 x 240 if you scanned at 72 dpi

You can see some fuzziness with teh 72 as it is below 91 dpi but the other 2 are essentially the same

as for file size and compression I save at High Level 6 and the file sizes are 22 kb, 66 kb and 197 kb respectively (double the dpi, triple the file size)

I'm really anal about my scans so I actually scan them 2 at a time, crop down to one but I leave them at the original size in my own files and then promptly number and organize them all. Which is sad because I have no organization in my life except when it comes to cards.

I scan my cards in at 300dpi and shrink them to 504 x 360 at 72dpi. I find that works best for dimensions vs filesize (and it's double "real size")
