Player Collector Competition

So as the tittle says that is pretty much my dilema right now, someone appears to be collecting a player I have a PC of and is equally as generous making bids, and has sniped me twice on two hard to find cards one /10 one /5 in the dying seconds of auctions, after I had placed "nice" high bids that the auction shouldnt have come close to reaching without a Player PC Competitor.

Now my question is this. Since it appears money is not an issue with this guy, how should I approach him/her?

I do not yet know their ebay ID as well I have not seen any mailposts with the /5 card that was won just before xmas so I have no idea if they are even on a trading site.

How has your experiences with competition played out for the good/bad?
 
I run into this problem as well. The strategy I use is to wait and bid with 3 seconds left in an auction. It is almost impossible to place another bid before time runs out.
 
Forget making a deal. From experience, it very seldom works out. The Gabby mafia will try to claim otherwise, but they've been costing one another money for years.
 
I was also surprised to see him pay upwards of125 for the /5 which I believed would end around $50 and the /10 just ended over $50!! :o I also collect this player and I( have decided to focus on Minor League stuff that none of the other collectors of him seem to be going for! If you ever find out who this guy is PLMK! BTW I nabbed this years Team Set Jersey last night at $8.50! :) so you may want to add it to your wantlist! :)

You can also hope that he isn't a hoarder. If he is not, bid up the price of the first one, let him take it, and then get the next one for way less.
 
Tried to make an alliance once, the dude backstabbed me the first ocassion he got...

Ask the sellers he beat you on his used ID, or when he appeard against you some may share the info.

Unless you have a unlimitted budget or no competition at all, its almost impossible to get all of the harder to find cards from the rookie year.

There`s always someone out there willing to shell out more on a couple of high profile card. :|:|

If you cant work out something with him, try guetting some high end dupes he may not have, that way you have something to talk with down the road.
 
Slightly different phenomenon... I know I have people "bidding me up"... regularly. Happens to any player collector.

Set your snipe as late as possible, and whatever happens, will happen. Good thing about cards /5 and /10 is that there are 4 and 9 more of each, respectively... and over time, they WILL pop up.

he looks to be a hig roller player looks like he wpent 2000$ on a Crosby Sweet Spot Auto recently.
Also seems to be doing a master set of 09-10 artifacts. Guy is buying up artifacts like itrs candy.

Money is not the issue with me, just means I bust less wax if I have to pay more for a PC card, but the last two cards ending way more then I thought they should, first time it happend I thought OK I got beat, now after the second time, I know it is no mistake, I have competition.

11 Neudles, see the 8.00 bid on that jersey card??? That was me you outbid for it LOL SNIPED AGAIN!!! LOL

Really, I only know of one competitor and we're friendly with each other and have agreed to let one another have a certain card. It's the understanding, however, on super rare pieces that the best man gets the card.
 
Luckily for me, nobody knows who I collect, so I've never had to worry about another soul bidding on an auction I'm watching.

Seriously though, it happens... I hate "sniping" and myself refuse to do it.

Agreed with Q - when you've got a handful of dedicated player collectors bidding on the same cards, one of them is getting taken to the cleaners at every turn. They all seem like great guys who help each other out, though, so I'm sure it balances out.
 
No one will outbid me on a Betts card. Sorry Flyer's fans (although I don't see anyone chomping at the bit to buy up his stuff). Except that one guy who outbid me on an 06-07 Rangers Team Issue postcard of Betts. Still need one of those, but at least whoever it was had to pay over $50 for it :giggity:

As far as my other collections, I always let John jdg573 get first dibs on new Debut Patch issues because I know within 2 weeks he'll have the set all done and I can try to pick at the rest without bidding him up.

With my Girardi collection I always have to be on the lookout for the occasional big bidder, but as one of them once told me, all is fair on eBay. :beer:

Wait -- someone is actually trying a master set of Artifacts?

What illegal substances went into that decision?

The good news about that sort of buyer is that half the time, if you wait a year you'll see every single card they purchased dumped on ebay at the same time.
 
I ran into the same problem when I was collecting Bobby Ryan. I started before anyone else (or so I thought) That is when I met Matthew (WWJD10) he would out bid me on tough cards then send his appoligies. I just could not see running up the prices so I let him get them. This BTW has paid off nicely in a friendship and I was able to add a nice Ryan auto Plate to my collection.

Having some player collector competition used to bug me. Then I realized that I'm in no rush to get every Linden card out there right this minute.

Years ago, I would be frustrated by the same ebay user names beating me out on cards. I decided to contact them and asked if they had any doubles they would be looking at trading/selling. I have gotten to know a few of the other Linden collectors out there and from my experiences - it's been far more positive than not (by a landslide). If I am not the winner of a certain card on ebay, I am really happy to see that it is going to a good home with another Linden collector. In most cases, I know that another chance will come my way one day. Yes it might be years from now, but like I said before - I'm in no rush.

The camaraderie that has been built through the years in all honesty is a very important aspect of my collecting. If I'm not enjoying what I am collecting and who I am meeting through collecting, then I need to take a serious look at what I can do to rectify the situation.

Don't be in a rush to give up on a player collection because you have some competition. If the player you are collecting is important enough to you, I would suggest you tough it out or modify what you are collecting of said player (until you see a slowing down of the competition).

Just my opinion.

Maybe if I am lucky people who have the Artifacts /10 and /5 will see the recent sales and decide to try theirs online, for me to gobble up!!! or maybe with Caputi playing in his first NHL games this year and getting his first NHL goal this year will have same effect... either way lets hope the last ones show.
 
Watch out for Finnish collectors. They seem to have endless amounts of cash. I know my guy played in Finland for a part of a season and those guys buy up his stuff like crazy.
 
Myself and Al (Uhtred the Viking) have a pretty good system worked out as well. Since he collects everything Iginla and pick up the odd card here and there, sometimes he let's me get first crack at the card I want, sometimes it's every man for himself and most times he gets the card first. :D

In my opinion it's best to have some kind of agreement cause what is the sense in one of us bidding up the other collector on the first card when you will just get the second one for so much cheaper?
