PMG market on COMC

Looks like there was a ton of this product opened on ePack this week and a flood of PMGs heading over to COMC. The prices appear very good to me. Curious to know the general opinion of the board ... is this a buy opportunity or is the market flooded with PMGs?

Personally, I still really love the look of the cards and some of the alternate jersey singles are very nice. I fully plan on picking some up and submitting for grading.

probably the shorter print ones will hold value, maybe take a slight dip (non rookie) otherwise all the rest will probably drop in value. PMG aren't as popular in hockey as they are in basketball and the money isn't flowing into the market like it did a couple years ago. Just my take though.
 
The PMG is going the way of the jersey card.

I collected PMG's up to and including the 2016-17's but now that they are literally flooding the market with them (just looked at COMC and woah!), I am done. I'll keep most of what I already have and possibly pick up the odd rookie year card. But as far as attributing strong value, I'll stick with that first wave of those that came before 20-21 Skybox metal (of which I am sitting on an unopened case).

My approach is the same as that I took for jersey cards; I've almost finished completing the first two years' sets (13 cards in 1996-97, and have 10 so far from 97-98) and haven't looked at, or had interest in any since.
 
Does it maybe feel like they are flooding the market due to the product catch-up phase we are currently in? I think a slabbed PMG is probably the nicest collectible available.

I can see the bottom falling out on common guys but for the stars I think the current prices are very nice (just bought a PMG Green Huberdeau for under $100 CDN).

Add to this .. the quality control seems to be much better this year. Check out the Malkin PMG green currently listed on eBay through COMC. That's at least a 9.

Probably has to do with ePack more then any other factor. Skybox was released on it recently.

Right, this is my question ... are current low prices an anomaly based on the recent break on ePack or is it the new status quo?

The price of Skybox Metal U on ePack was actually cheaper than what I've seen at local shops, plus the achievement rewards were very nice (McDavid Jambalaya). The low price I think is just people that overextended themselves for the achievement and are desperate-ish to recoup funds. Great buy opportunity IMO.
 
The only ones that will hold some value are the retro PMGs. And since all of the current vets were in 12/13 or 20/21, that just leaves the rookies.
 
I follow a few big PMG collectors on instagram and a lot of them don't care for newer Skybox/PMG releases, whether it's the design (or lack thereof), or that they're so common now. The interest isn't there from the big collectors and spenders
 
As a non pmg guy are you guys just refering to the greens /10 or also the reds /100? I'm assuming the greens /10 are the ones you are talking about.

I feel that this is a correct assessment. Something similar happened in non-sport with the Sketch Card. And really: any product insert that catches fire will be noticed by the producing companies, who will then systematically exploit its market value to the limit of market demand.

That may sound unfairly critical. It is not criticism of their actions. It is recognition of an entirely rational response to the situation from a profit-driven company.
 
Hockey PMGs have always been overrated IMO. Yes even the first 2012 ones. Nice looking cards don’t get me wrong, but it seems there is a segment out there who is trying to pump them up to the level of the original basketball ones from the 90’s and it all just seems forced and inorganic to me. Nobody batted an eye at the hockey ones until Nat Turner’s purchase of the green Jordan a few years ago made everything with PMG written on it explode.

If I was an insert guy I’d much rather have the hockey stuff that was actually around in the 90’s and has that multi-decade lineage. Run for The Cup, StarQuest Gold, etc.
 
Regarding COMC:
COMC is its own micro-economy. The stuff that happens there do not necessarily correlate 1:1 with eBay etc. The good news is that it serves as a focal point for collectors to buy cards and often times cheaper than in some other areas for certain items. With Metal (and ePack in general) , there is huge emphasis on achievements, rendering other cards as "useless" creating a false economy where people race to the bottom to dump their cards. This is where collectors can benefit. ePack is not going anywhere and if anything is gathering more and more steam with each passing release.


As for Metal, we've reached metal fatigue. A LOT of products have had metal clones across Metal Champions, Skybox, Marvel Metal products etc. That being said, I suspect the lull in popularity to be short lived. This is an opportunity to get certain issues cheaper than in the future. Having said that, Jimmy Vesey PMGs ain't gonna ever get to levels where you can bank on it so keep that in mind.

I will pick up the key ones I want when the price is right. I will hold them as I like the look of them.. I prefer the older ones as Jeremy mentioned. Those have nostalgia in mind.


As a cute side note, the definition of metal fatigue in metallurgy is this..

"metal fatigue, weakened condition induced in metal parts of machines, vehicles, or structures by repeated stresses or loadings, ultimately resulting in fracture under a stress much weaker than that necessary to cause fracture in a single application".

I'd love to see a side insert set with this in mind haha..

1,000 % agree. PMGs aren’t hideous, but I would prefer to never own one. Having said that, my completionist-brain is forcing me to grab the Whalers ones (yes there are some). I simply don’t buy the hype.

This is where I stand. Some of today's deals will be future desirables. I'm happy picking up some of the blue-chippers today (McDavid, Makar, Crosby, top rookies) at suppressed prices and holding them for the next 5-10 years.

They’ll probably try to buy UD just like they did with Topps in baseball. There’s too much continuity to ignore by starting from scratch. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Panini America bought out at some point, too.

It is logic, it would be easier to continue with established brands than starting from scratch.
