Possible Fake Soviet Autographs on eBay.

Folks,

A fellow Russian collector here on HI asked me for my opinion on this auction, which I also had my eye on when it first hit eBay. I actually considered posting this anyways. My first impression instantly said it was fake and I've been trying to tell me otherwise, but I can't. I even contacted the seller and he wasn't sure if they were authentic. He seems very co-operative and a stellar guy. Even sent me a larger scan to look at.

1) The autographs are very sloppy and I have never seen such bad copies of Kharlamov, Tarasov or Petrov. Ever. They don't look natural or feel natural for that matter, even if signatures taken in-person obviously do not necessarily look anything like they normally should do.

2) I have never seen this kind of Soviet item/sheet without any player signing their number, either from the league or national.

3) My gut tells me that someone has tried to clearly forge these by using Postcard sets of the Soviet National Team where each player has a facismile signature. I think there were 4-5 sets in the early 70's, with autographs of all players.

This is just heads-up. This is my opinion and mine only. I'd love to be proven wrong, since it would make for an awesome object if it were truly authentic.

Personally, I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.

That is a postcard from the 1969-70 set which obviously doesn't have to mean anything, but also points out that they are familiar with the postcard sets. Facismile autographs are featured of all three persons in the set.

I may be simplifying it a bit, Vic, but the thing that jumps out at me is on the two postcards, I find it odd that every single player signed at the same angle.

I agree with both your assessments Vic and Kevin. The angle of each auto stands right out. Of any group auto piece I've ever obtained I have never had, nor seen, that kind of flow. Each athlete, being individuals, tend to alter the angle of their signature to stand apart from the flock. This example shown by Vic comes across as individual, as if one person did the whole shooting match. Another thing seemingly evident is that each auto seems forced, not flowing like the original scribes would be expected to be. Same ink pen and same pressure applied on all sigs. My personal assessment, stay away from this auction like Superman from Kryptonite.

Angle jumps out immediately, but you also have to assume that these autos weren't collected at the same time so I'd also offer up the pen that was used...seems like a lot of the Russian autos are signed in red as well (which may be neither here nor there) but the autos looks like they were signed at one sitting.

Too many bells means an alarm is ringing somewhere. I would pass and pass hard on these.
