Post an Autograph and critique it

I used to be the biggest Marian Gaborik collector in the world. I only went after autos and game-used cards of his. While I still have an extensive collection of his (sold a good amount of his bigger cards), I phased out collecting him around 2018. His auto is always short and sweet...basically the "GK" from Gaborik...and his jersey number, which was 10 for most of his career, then later 12 when he was with the Kings.

I rate it a 6/10

My next auto is of Brian Bellows. He was a 1000 point/1000 game player who I think is very underrated. He had 485 goals, too, so he was very close to the coveted 500-goal club. He was on the last Canadian team to win a Cup (1993 Montreal).

I think he has a nice and very legible auto. I give it an 8/10:

Great idea for a thread!

First auto of mine to critique...Wayne Gretzky.

I only have a few Gretzky autographs (4 cards and two non-card items). I am picky on what autographs of his I get. On cards, about 85% are what I call his fast "chicken scratch' auto. Looks like this (not my card):

This auto is fine for most people...and don't get me wrong...I would be perfectly happy to pull a card like this. (y) But I would probably use it though to trade for other cards. His auto cards are high $$ now and great as trade bait. But when I go after a Gretzky auto card for my personal collection, it has to be his more "took his time" auto. But that's just the quirkiness in me. 😄

I picked up this card years ago for one reason...mainly because it is what I would consider a 10/10 "took his time" auto from the Great One. Not his "chicken scratch" auto.

Every hockey collector should have a Wayne auto card in their collection. There are A LOT out there. And they will always hold their value! I haven't picked up a Gretzky auto card in a while...mostly due to the current high prices. I'm just glad I have the ones that I do have.

Agree 100% Curt! There are lots of Gretzky autos but they’re not all made the same. Picking the right cards with nice autos is the way to go

I've always liked Sid's autograph and this one from his rookie year is great! I'd give it an 8/10

To add to the Sid discussion, he’s got an all-time great auto but his absolute best sigs are when he has lots of room and signs big:

When he has a small, narrow area to sign in like a sticker it can really compress the auto vertically to the point it doesn’t look as good as it’s not an auto that can stretch much horizontally. Older sticker autos look better but it’s definitely more noticeable on modern ones.

And sometimes he’ll have the room for a big auto but will sign small anyway for some reason and make you wish he had used the area to stretch it out

I have a higher number (mid 40’s) of the same auto/patch set. Somewhere a while back, it was determined that the 1st 12 of the Spezza auto patches were correct, the rest were “flipped”. Fascinating error! I don’t know of how many of the /75 auto versions were correct.
