With each year that we put the 1990s behind us, there seems to be a growing nostalgia among hockey card collectors for some of the brands of yesteryear. Each season, Upper Deck looks to satisfy that yen for the past and 2016-17 Fleer Showcase Hockey is expected to deliver plenty of retro fun once it comes out in March.

Reconfigured and with a lower box price, Showcase averages a hit of some sort in each pack and the roster includes hobby favorites such as the iconic Precious Metal Gems plus lots of rookie ink.

This isn't a knock on the cards.... as I think they look very nice.... and please correct me if I'm wrong - but there is NOTHING nostalgic about "hockey cards" and "precious metal gems".

Metal Universe certainly sounds 90s, so does Flair, and while I like the idea of a mostly insert-driven product... and retro themed cards.... I've never understood this release: It claims to the retro, but there's little retro about it.

I realize that stuff like PMG were big in basketball.... but they were never a hockey set until UD reintroduced them as a retro thing recently.

Am I the only one that thinks these retro sets, that do little (if anything) to actually use 90s hockey designs, are odd ?

I think you are right. Basketball was a really big things in terms of these inserts and they tried to boost it for the hockey collector.
If this product is not like 40% cheaper, I think it will stay on the shelf.
