Prospal Extended for 1 year

I love that he's sticking around, good character guy, but in our current affairs I would have loved to get a decent prospect or pick for him. It's nice to have him back though.

Seems like a stretch, but give Prospal the C and trading Nash and Carter before the deadline? I feel like keeping him is a sign that something big might happen.

He could still be on his way out of town depending on what that number is - teams can view him as less of a rental and may even be willing to give up a little bit more for him if they can keep him next year as well.

A lot of teams out there looking for top six scoring so it still wouldn't suprise me to see him heading out of town at the deadline.

I don't think so. According to Aaron Portzline it has a NTC in the contract.

"Prospal's deal also includes a "gentleman's agreement" w #CBJ. He'll keep signing 1-year deals through rest of his playing career, then take on a position with the organization. "His value goes way beyond the points," GM Scott Howson tells Dispatch."

i'm very, very surprised. why not trade him for the rest of the season and get something for him and then re-sign in the offseason?
CBJ could have at least got a mid-round pick for him if not more.

Makes no sense at all. This teams needs to rebuild and they re-sign one of the assets they have to move at the deadline? Howson is a tool

I think a lot of it has to do with his family though, I heard his family loves Columbus, hence the reason he wants to end his career here and take a position within the organization.

As much as I hate Howson, I disagree. I think this is a great move. Vinny has been one of our most outspoken and best character guys the entire year. He's a great vet that has helped the younger guys out and he wants to be here. I'll gladly keep anyone with his character and productivity that wants to be here for the long haul.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he's not a great guy. However, your organization needs a huge facelift therefore you need to trade your "moveable" assets. Prospal was one of those assets. If this signing had happened AFTER they had moved Carter, Vermette and a few other guys then maybe I'd understand.

I have little to no faith in Howson to do anything productive. I wish they'd can everyone and put Patrick at the wheel. Start over. If it means trading Nash then trade him.

if Prospal loves the organization so much, why not have them trade you to a contender, get the asset in return, and then re-sign in Columbus in the offseason?

would it hurt him and his family so much to go play in NY or wherever for a couple of months and then come right back? especially if he loves it so much in Columbus.

It depends. I tend to think athletes w/kids get tired of missing school plays, little league games, or whatever else they're into. He's 36, has played forever for several different teams, and I'm sure tired of traveling.

i'm sure of that, but if you are that tired of it then just retire. i find it disturbing that 1) Prospal doesn't want a shot at the playoffs 2) he isn't willing to bring his team some assets to chase a chance at a Cup.

Resign the team leader and one of the most underrated forwards in the game in the past 20 years? Probably the only good signing the CBJ's have done since their inception.....

Prospal is not an asset they 'need' to move. He is a veteran leader with loads of playoff experience that comes at a cheap price. Not to mention that at age 35/36 he wouldn't command much in return anyway. Good resigning for CBJ, the guy is a class act and is an invaluable leader on an otherwise young and inexperienced team.

I think Prospal wanted some assurance so that's why he just signed the deal now.
I'm happy with the signing, quite surprised. I guess he feels the team is better then what the record shows based on the twitter comments. He was quite vocal on how bad the team was playing at the beginning of the season. Would have thought he would have peaced out, asap, esspecially since the team didn't improve.

i don't blame him for taking the deal in that he now has some assurance. my issue is less with Prospal and more with Howson. if you are Howson, you need as many assets as you can get. the market isn't going to be that hot for Prospal this summer. there isn't a huge off-season market for 36+ year old centers. Columbus isn't what you would call "stocked" in young talent. it's a missed opportunity in a seller's market to pick up another asset that your last place team could really use.

Let me remind you we are talking about Vinny Prospal.

Again, the 'assets' he would bring in rhyme with the ever helpful medical term "suture cauterization".

I am sure his experience on a "rebuilding" team mean more to the club than whatever a future career AHLer can bring.

And if you're implying another team is "missing out" with your last comment, then maybe. But that is your only real argument here. Even then, as you stated, there isnt a huge market for 36+ centers. He would go to a team like Detroit or Boston for aforementioned 'future assets'.

i think Prospal is worth a lot more at the deadline to a contender in a seller's market than he would be in the offseason. that's my point.

sell high, buy low. Prospal would be one of the better players available at the deadline but would not be in demand in the summer.

Prospal is respected in the locker room. Also with the gentlemen's agreement between him and Howson, he must have Howson's respect as well. I'm guessing that Howson asked him if he wanted to be dealt to a contender and be brought back in the Summer. I'm guessing Prospal said, "no thanks". With that, I think Howson out of respect, decided to sacrifice a pick and signed him to a extension.
Also, a lot(not me as I don't want it) is saying Columbus should do a rebuild so bringing back a aging player is pointless. Perhaps Howson doesn't want to do a rebuild so that is why he brought him back, rather then trading him.
