Prospal is respected in the locker room. Also with the gentlemen's agreement between him and Howson, he must have Howson's respect as well. I'm guessing that Howson asked him if he wanted to be dealt to a contender and be brought back in the Summer. I'm guessing Prospal said, "no thanks". With that, I think Howson out of respect, decided to sacrifice a pick and signed him to a extension.
Also, a lot(not me as I don't want it) is saying Columbus should do a rebuild so bringing back a aging player is pointless. Perhaps Howson doesn't want to do a rebuild so that is why he brought him back, rather then trading him.

yeah, i get all that. i guess we'll see what Howson does. i just think you don't pass up assets to accommodate Prospal. he's a journeyman and not part of your core. Columbus is nowhere near contending so i think they should be accumulating assets as much as they can.

Trade the player for a 3rd round pick:
Everyone will complain that you got rid of him for nothing, why didn't you sign him an extension and keep him around.

And its why didn't you trade him for a 3rd round pick and then resign him when hes a UFA in the summer?

Well in this case I like going with the resigning of him. Who knows what his value would have been but a 3rd or 4th round pick is not really an "Asset". 1st or 2nd and I would agree that would have been adding an "Asset".

It's not like he has a long history with the CBJ so not sure the trade then resign him when he is a UFA would have been an option anyways.

I think its nice to see that they value his leadership over the next couple of months much more than a future pick that he would have brought in. I think this has been one of the aspects that has been missing around here is the leadership from vetrans...If we are going to be trading away guys for prospects and picks we still need some of that vetran leadership around for the next couple of months...

i guess my question is couldn't they do both? couldn't they have got that 3rd round pick (my guess is he would have got a lot more for Prospal as i think it's a thin market) and then re-sign him in the summer?

i don't see why it has to be one or the other when it could be both.

So, essentially people like the signing because he brings leadership? Leadership to a team going absolutely nowhere? Who exactly is he leading? It's not like Columbus is filled with good young talent. They have ONE top prospect, his name is Ryan Johansen and they choose to sit him in the press box on most nights. They could have sent the kid back to Junior but instead he rides the pine. Great way to develop a player.
