Been collecting for 45+ years, but one thing I never really got into was graded cards. Not a fan of paying some random person to give me their opinion on how perfect, or not, my cards conditions are. Not interested in arguing the logic, it just doesn't appeal to me at all, and till now, I haven't bothered with it. I understand that cards with gem mint grades fetch higher money, but I really don't collect for investment purposes, and as long as it has the criteria of my favorite players, or team, and the card looks to be in great shape corner wise, centering etc, I'm fine with that for my collection. I don't need to fork out any more money to have someone else tell me otherwise. Some may beg to differ, and that's fine, I understand where they are coming from, too.
Maybe, a lot of my way of thinking has something to do with not knowing how to price cards that have been graded. I have no idea what value to put on something that is graded PSA 10 for example, to a similar card that is raw ungraded. I don't think I'm alone, which brings me to my question. Is there some sort of multiplier on how to figure out graded card prices, or does it depend on what set, what year, and what company grades the card?
I'll give you an example, and maybe someone could give me an idea on what values I'm looking at (I won't name the player just to see what answer I get). I just bought an SPA FWA of a decent defenseman from a set a few years ago. It has a BV of $20. So, my question is what kind of value is that same card graded PSA 10 Gem Mint? I also bought another SPA FWA of a player from my favorite team with a BV of $30. It was a PSA 9 Mint grade. What is the book value of that card in comparison to a raw grade, and what grade would that card have at the high BV $30 mark? Is a high BV card graded around the PSA 8 grade, or 8.5, or what, and what grade would the low BV be? This is something I've never been able to figure out. Anyone want to shed some light on this, or is it just a crap shoot figuring out price, and values of graded cards? I'm sure it is different with older cards, but for now let's keep it to recent cards :foottap:
