PSA or Beckett grading for vintage cards?

The PSA cases are more than adequate. Not sure how they are flimsy, what are you doing with the cards? I just store and display them. Unless playing pingpong and using them for the paddle they are plenty strong lol. PSA is more respected in the vintage section with collectors, they will sell better. PSA holders take up less room and stack and display better.

You are correct! Cases are flimsy, cards shake around in the holders . . . The only reason to have PSA vintage is the resale value. Even if PSA are excellent graders, what's the point when their holders are crap? Go with BGS for the better protection - better in the short-term and long-term.

Flimsy by definition - easily broken, torn; not strong or solid (Webster's Dictionary). I think that defines them to a tee! Hahaha. Using them for playing pingpong - that would be funny. I see your points, and as I've said (and other's as well) they have better resale value for vintage. I get it. But I still don't see how that trumps the lack of a good sturdy holder. What also makes BGS holders better is the inner sleeve component, which helps to prevent movement within the holder, which further adds to the quality and durability of their thicker holders.

Does every PSA card shift in its holder? Im concerned about long term wear and tear. Maybe what i should be asking the vintage collector's is how long they have had their cards PSA graded and if they still happy with the condition of their cards. Sorry to ask but if Im grading 12 or so cards I really want my cards to be:

1. Safely encased.
2. Easy to handle.
3. Looking vintage.

Lmk what your opinions are, thanks.

I have never seen a PSA graded card get damaged while in the holder. The design has bumpers on the four sides, it would take some serious movement to damage the card. I have never heard a person complain of damage while in the holder.

I don't see it mentioned that BGS also grades sheet cut cards, something PSA does not.

This is why PSA 9's and 10's of vintage go for a considerable premium over BGS 9.5's. Typically they are cut from a sheet.

And the scales continue to tilt...If the vintage traders trust PSA and are content with the PSA holders then so am I. Wow..who would have thought this would be that tough of a decision!

As long as you are happy with your decision. And you are now informed. But if you like you can try playing pingpong with a PSA holder.

Ha ha not a chance in H.E. double hockey sticks!! Thanks for all of the help guys. Im going with PSA but not until next month. So if anyone wants to change my mind, Im listening.

SGC has been getting a strong following over the last few years. Their track record for consistent grading has been much stronger than PSA, however the secondary value is still a little behind their PSA equivalent. Sharp looking cases, with protection that falls nicely in between PSA (which I have had MORE than a few break on me in the mail) and BVG. The cases are also stackable like PSA. My preference in SGC, although they are quite stingy with their grading- speaking with other collectors, almost all SGC grades successfully cross over to their PSA equivalent or higher, the same cannot be said in reverse. SGC also offers Great rates ($7 per 1951 parkhurst or any other card post 1948 with a vale under $250), and have a Canadian shipping address for cards which is the cherry on top for me.

Cheers,
Dave

Another reason PSA may sell higher than BGS or SGC is their set registry. People working on high grade sets will pay more for certain cards from PSA so they can register it in their set. Bidding wars happen often when high grade cards appear for auction.
