Hey folks,

Just wondering if anyone happens to know exactly how many different press plates are used in the printing process of Beckett magazines....

"Set" of 4 (red, blue, yellow, black)

Another black plate that sold 10/20 (with mutual feedback left)

And yet a 3rd black plate that sold 10/28 (no feedback left as of yet)

And I am certain that another yet another "set" of 4 sold on the bay over this past Summer, but I did not have the auction on my watch list, so I do not have the link.

Doesn't the standard printing process require only 1 set of 4 plates, or am I missing something here?

It really depends on the pressman who installs the plates and operates the press. Plates can get damaged, scratched, bent, kinked, wear out... happens more than people would think. And depending on how big the run is... half a dozen sets of plates is not atrociously large imo.

I spent 7 years in the industry - I saw a set of plates last for 500 impressions, and 50,000 impressions... so the range is wide.

The typical Beckett Magazine has 16 pressplates. There are 4 black, 4 cyan, 4 magenta, and 4 yellow plates.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the insight. :)

I guess that I've gotten too used to seeing all of the UD Masterpiece Press Plates labeled as "1/1's" over the years. I suppose the difference may be that in the case of the UD MPP's, there is only 1 set of 4 plates put into circulation via pack insertion, and perhaps any/all remaining plates are destroyed, thus legitimizing the pack-pulled plates as 1/1's. I notice that the descriptions on the Beckett plate auctions make no claim that any of them are 1/1's.
