Question about Pinnacle Mint 97-98

How do you know the difference between all the different coins and stuff? On my Joe Thornton list I have the following

Brass
Brass Proofs /500
Gold Plated
Gold Plated Proofs
Nickel Silver
Nickel Silver Proofs
Solid Gold 1/1 and COA
Solid Silver COA

Now I realize silver and nickel are much different then brass and gold but I can't tell the difference between brass and gold. I have looked it up on ebay and still no help. I could get a scan of the one I have right now if anybody would be able to help identify it

Ummm I just know the silver and gold ones come with a COA. I actually have a Joe Thornton coin that it says Limited Edition on the back and is /500. Probably Brass Proof I think. PM me if interested
