Question about UD Buybacks 1/1's

UD Buybacks is a pretty cool release and it gives you a much better chance at low numbered autos of your favorite players. I recently picked up an Iggy 09-10 SP Authentic 1/1 from the buyback product. I've noticed a bunch of different Iginla 1/1's on the market and I'm not sure how I feel about it now. I've always wanted an Iginla hard signed 1/1, but would you actually consider buyback 1/1's to be true 1/1's? I'm not sure if this is a dumb question but I'd appreciate some opinions! Thanks in advance!

Let me preface this with 1/1's are always a "bonus" type inclusion in a PC. You can't count truly them in the total numbers since there isn't multiple copies to chase and make them attainable for more than one. Anything 2 or more is fair game.

That said, this is a tough question. The fact there could be 50 different cards, all 1/1, of Iginla from various products inserted, you would say 50 1/1's because he signed one of each, no more, right? But then someone could probably take the same 50 cards to a practice and have him sign all 50 and they would hold the same value to them. I think unless they are pack-inserted in the original product, released in the concurrent year, and stamped or labeled as a 1/1 they are not "true" 1/1's.

That said, it's a great product UD put out and very cool to have all these cards available again with an added autograph. Who doesn't love ink?
 
I'll concur with Barrie on this. It's a very cool bonus and a great thing to have in someone's collection. A couple years back I did something pretty similar with Brendan Gallagher's Canvas YG--got 11 copies and had him sign them at a private signing event so there was COA and everything on them, and they were #'d /11 as well. I like to think I inspired UD a little bit. haha
 
I might be in the minority, but I categorize all buybacks in the Oddball bucket so 1/1 or not - they are really more like in person autos to me than legit mainstream cards. Now that's not to say my OCD doesn't have me chasing them, of course I have to have everything under the sun with the Sedins on it.

I agree mostly of this!
But I'm just satisfied to having just 1 of 4 Buybacks card with my PC-guy and they doesn't feels like a actual mainstream card, mostly like a in person autographed like sedinfan mentioned up above and I absolutely can't justify to paying $100-$115 for each one if now I'm chasing all those four cards for my PC then since a DNA/PSA certified autographs with very same cards goes for a fraction of the prices for those 15-16 Buybacks cards....
92-93 one has always been my priority since I saw the CL and already got that card and missed the 90-91 one but the seller wanted $225 so no way!

A early 90's non-certified in person autographed Barrasso cards goes for below $10 or $15 as mostly.....some times around $20 perhaps?

Just a nice bonus and nothing more since there're many pretty "ugly" 15-16 Buybacks with horrible placements of the autos on the cards or autos on the darkest parts on the cards.....still absolutely baffled that 15-16 Buybacks was a such huge success while 14-15 UD Premier struggles despite having some insanely nice sets in that series.....

You're not in the minority, that's basically what I said, they're about as valuable as me taking them to a practice and having the same cards signed there. ;)

Rich is onboard as well.
 
I checked completed sales and there are "1/1's" of HHOF players like Neely, Selanne (soon to be), Messier, Oates, Hull, etc selling for $30-60.

And the fact some of the players have like 15-20 "1/1's" in the product will only lower those prices.
 
I have to say, I don't agree. The big difference for me between some autograph hound standing outside the rink (or chasing people thru an airport) is the fact that these cards with the added autos are certified by Upper Deck as being authentic. I would liken these more to the items that get signed at an organized appearance / signing session. Those have some form of coa from either the store/venue, the company that handles said appearances, or the athlete themself.

I'm not an autograph hunter, so maybe I'm just not quite in the same place and mindset, but I trust the items from a product like this 1000 times more than some hound who sets up shop on the bay and sells cards or custom pictures they they had auto'd outside a gym, with only a picture of the player getting into their car as proof they've ever even breathed the same air as the player.

I agree with this. To me they are truly 1/1's. Who cares if the player has 15-20 1/1's in the set or not? That's not much different from other product releases throughout the year. It's 15 different cards, signed, stickered by the card manufacturer with a unique number and authenticity inserted into a sealed box for purchase. That is WAY different than you going to get it in person. For every HHOF card seen going for $30-60, there are many other examples on ebay of them selling for much, much more. Even the red parallels which truly have no unique qualifiers other than being stampted /5 have sold in the $50-80 range, though not common.

Heck, I got a really ugly Bobby Clarke 1/1 auto for $18.57 plus shipping. I collect everything Bobby Clarke, but like others said, I'll buy these if the price is right, I'm not going to pay big bucks for something that is nothing more than a nice bonus in my collection.

You think there aren't a bunch of those out there that people have had signed already for their own collections? Sure, they might not be signed in blue ink or have a hologram, but they're still the same exact card with an autograph.

Bingo. The difference in quality between a hound auto and a private signing session auto is significant.
 
It's a funny topic.

I mean, I'm not sure how anyone can call them the "same" card. What one person likes vs the next, it's all subjective.... but I'll use Iginla (was the example above) but a different card... simply because I found a buyback, and an in person signed version:

Those are not the same thing. I mean, the auto quality on the buyback is a lot better anyway.... but you could click the BIN and get one for less than a 10th of the price of the other (and it's a card /3, not even a 1/1).

Do I think either of these cards will sell at those prices? No. The IP would probably get no bids at 99 cents. The Buyback might get half of that (but the difference in asking prices is my point).


Ranford didn't have anything in this product, but I would have gone after them if he had. The prices that some of these cards have gone for has exceeded my expectations, but I think that simply reflects the value that collectors put on that UD COA (vs anyone selling IP autos) and also the popularity of nostalgia.... which I think has a lot to do with it.

I mean, I don't under stand the attraction towards a buy-back YG from 2 years ago, of a mid-level player, numbered to 25...... but I do see the attraction to a 1/1 autograph of one of your favs from the 90s, from a UD set you remember busting packs from.



As for the "true 1/1" tag, I would liken these more to 1/1 parallels, so whatever you call those (true? not true?) I'd label these the same. They've got more in common with a "Gold" version /1 than they do a Shield, if that's what the question is.
 
That's the thing though, without the hologram, without UD's COA, without being pack inserted and pulled, they are NOT the same exact card. Nothing can make it so. UD is certifiying this is the only copy they have presented to the athlete for a signature to be released in THEIR product.

I feel like these are not 1/1. Plus UD did have the athletes signed some existing card with an original print run and add another new print run on these! That is pushing it IMO. plus it ruins the original print run. They should offer real buybacks cards all over like the Crosby Cup RC and have the NEW design base cards with some autos versions.
Young Guns have never been signed but now some are. I don't like that.
 
Are we debating what these "1/1's" are worth or are we debating if they are a 1/1? Either way to me we are debating something absolute, like debating if a gold fish is a fish or not.

A better question is, is that 1/1 parallel that is the exact same card as the /5, /10, /25 /100 /299 etc a "true 1/1" because it has a 1/1 printed on it? Absolutely it is because it has a 1/1 printed on it!

Now aesthetically is it a true 1/1 putting aside the stamp, absolutely not. It's the exact same card with hundreds of different parallels. It's almost as if the hobbyists have been duped into believing what a true 1/1 is. A 1/1 to me is about uniqueness.

Regarding these 1/1's in Buybacks I would have to say they are the epitemy of what a "True 1/1" is. They are a 100% unique card with a top quality autograph, with no parallel and hand numbered 1/1 accompanied by a COA. Yes you could take the same card and get an IP auto but it's still not the same final product, the IP auto will be garbage and you will not have the most dependable industry standard COA to go with it.

My final verdict, these are actual 1/1's and so many of you "parallel crazies" don't know how to handle the uniqueness of them!
 
The serial numbered 1/1 card (stamped or otherwise) as a parallel has lost its luster for me. The only 1/1 that I feel still means something is the printing plate.
 
In person autos are junk IMO and have no value to me. Many of the autos are fake out there, and the quality are crap.

UD Buybacks are certified and people have voted by opening up their wallets. Lucky for me, UD didn't make Seguin YG Buyback Auto.
