Questions regarding Sheet Cut cards

i have a bgs 9.5 card (from 80's) that has 9.5 surface subgrade and 9.0 edge subgrade.

in my observation most 9.5 sheet cuts have 9.5 in centering/edge/corners and 9.0 in surface. therefore my feeling is that a card with 9.0 in edge and 9.5 in surface is likely NOT a sheet cut. plus if it's laser cut the edge should be 9.5 or 10 and not 9.0.


what do you guys think this? i am not toooo familiar with sheet cuts so i am interested in hearing what you guys have to say.
 
I would image that not everyone that cuts sheets are all equally skilled and some cards can be botched, even slightly, leading to the lower grade.

yes, i understand that could happen leading to edge not being 9.5/10. However my impression is that generally the edge get 9.5 from sheet cuts.

also, my impression is that generally the surface of a sheet is the lower graded one since it is difficult to store sheet without affecting the surface.


i guess i am interested to learn how often is edge botched so it receives less than 9.5, and how often is it for surface of a sheet cut to receive 9.5 or 10.0
 
well, i received my bgs 9.5 80's card today.. i am pretty damn sure it's pack pulled. in a sense it is awesome (pack pulled 9.5) but the edge is "bad" enough that i think it could had gotten an 8.5 (therefore bringing it down to 9.0 overall)
 
what card is it?

if it's a 9.5 of an 80's OPC Hockey Card, odds are its sheet cut
 
it's a mario lemieux opc rc.

and i am pretty sure it's not a sheet cut, the edges are borderline 9.0. i have few other lemieux that are pack pulled (i dind't pull them, but i bought them ungraded during the period of 1994 to 99) and the "opc cut" are very comparable.

i also have a sheet cut bourque (and sheet cut claude lemieux) and the differences in the edges are day and night.


i am so confident that this is pack pulled, i actually question whether this really should be a 9.5 card. the edge looks rather close to another lemieux i have with 8.5 edge as opposed to a different lemieux i have with 9.0 edge. And the centering is only looks a littttle bit better than one i have with 8.5 centering.

i honestly can't differentiate the 9.0 surface vs the 9.5 surface.. but i was looking with bare eyes.

in a sense the 9.5 card could had gotten:
Edge: 8.5 (this card received a weak 9.0 IMO)
Centering: 9.0 (this card barely better than another one i have with 8.5 centering, but eh, it probably does pass for 9.5 here)
Corners: 9.5 (this card has solid 9.5 corners in my opinion)
Surface: 9.0 (since I can't tell the diff between 9.5 surface and 9.0 surface)

i would had liked to post focused, up close scan of all the lemieux i have for you guys to compare but the scanner i have at home can't focus on the cards.. plus some of the defections are difficult to see (ie: a 9.0 corner vs 9.5 corner)... The rough edge of the 9.5 card would be noticable in a focused scanner though.

if i can get those clear scans i'll write up a short story too (i ruined a $400+ card because i left it in top loader without teambag and it slipped out and now has hairline crease on top)

This is the issue with sheet cut cards. Even if yours isn't sheet cut, people will guess that it actually is. Go to Martin's table at the Expo and he'll have tons of 9.5s, but he'll also have tons of 9s, 8.5s, 8s, etc. Not all will make the grade, but they'll still be able to get a ridiculous ROI on any sheet they purchase.
 
The only chance that a card is not sheet cut from the 80s would be from vending. The wires would be resharpened before the separate vending run and the cuts were generally better, but even then, because of the very imprecise cutting method, you would still be looking at a lot of badly centered cards for OPC in general

From what youve said, it doesnt sound like a sheet cut.
sorry to hear about your scanner. time for a new one? :)

Yes, but are those 9's, 8.5's.. 8's.. due to bad surface? do they generally have 9.5/10 centering and edge? my bourque cut has lower surface score (7.5) that brought the whole card down to 8. (9.0, 9.5, 9.5 in other 3 categories)

ya, we hear that pretty often. once i get the scans we can judge. this is no doubt NOT a sheet cut in my opinion though. what's left to debate is whether this is vending, or pack pulled (don't know if this matter) and whether this was graded on a softer scale (the other 2 lemieux i have are on old label too, i have also heard that they graded tougher back then)
 
I have a 85/86 Topps Lemieux Rookie #9---Graded 7.5 that I pulled myself. I'll have to dig it out to check the sub's.
