Quick Question re Orr Jersey

Hi guys,

was checking out Orr Jerseys and there is one with the name plate on it. I was wondering if the Bruins ever wear jerseys with the player's name on the back during Orr's time? or just the number?

It would kind of wreck it for me if Orr never wored a jersey with his name on the back and then I went and bought a vintage one with his name on it. It would take the authenticity away for me. I am weird that way. I can't find a photo to verify

For that matter did Howe? there are plenty of retro jerseys with HOWE name plate on it too.

I just did a quick check and it appears that Boston started wearing nameplates the year after Orr left and the Red Wings starting using nameplates around 6 years after Howe left.

I'm pretty sure he never wore Orr on the back of his Bruins jersey. I know he did for team Canada though...

77-78 was the first year teams were required to wear names on the backs of their jerseys. Orr played his last game for the Bruins in 76-77. Did not play in 77-78 and returned tot he NHL with the Blackhawks in 78-79. Of course in that year his jersey would have had a name on the back.

So your answer is:

Boston: No
Chicago: Yes

I had read that Orr wore the nameplate on the Boston jersey for a few televised games, but not for regular games.

Man, that just ruins it for me. Why do they do that? (make retro jerseys of guys with nameplates when they never wore a jersey with nameplate)

They could have just replicated what Orr wore and simply put no. 4. with no name. Why oh why must they put on the orr?

I guess I am just anal but I would definitely just prefer the no. 4.

Or you can just get a blank jersey and just have the number added to it - nothing more.

yea...I got myself a vintage Bruins jersey with number 27....you'de be surprised how many B's fans ask me about that! lol
